I was thinking of volunteering or working at a diabetes camp about two hours away from me during the summer. I'm nervous and scared because I have never gone to a diabetes summer camp before, and I'm worried that if I don't like it I'll be stuck there for a week or longer.. Has anyone experienced going to a diabetes camp before? I just want to know what it's like and what to expect.
diabetes camp has been one of the best experiences of my entire life i look forward to it every year i have gone 6 summers in a row and i wont miss one for anything. it is a rewarding in the fact that at that camp you are normal cause every one is diabetic and the people who arent are the odd ones out. i cant wait until im old enough to work med staff or be a counsler!
Camp is great! I started going when I was 7 and went until I was in my early teens. It's just like normal summer camp (camp fires, hiking, archery, boating, swimming, rock climbing, crafts, games) except everyone tests and takes insulin.
You'll have a wonderful time and be such a great role model to kids who have D.
I think if you've ever gone to any non-D summer camp, so probably know what you're getting yourself into... My summer camp had the basics, but wasn't luxurious or anything. But, what a great experience to help kids living w/ T1!
When I went as a kid, the counselors were able to leave for dinner in their cars on a rotating basis, so they weren't stuck for the whole session -- they occasionally got out.

You'll love camp. If you've never been to a summer camp it might take a day or two to get used to the flow of being outside and living on the campgrounds, but trust me, once you get into that flow, you'll never look back. The only people I've known who DIDN'T like camp were no fun to be around anyway.
So if you're a fun person and are even somewhat an outdoors-y person then you'll have a blast. You won't be dreading staying the whole week, instead you'll be sad it's over so soon. I promise.
