A1C probs

My last a1c was 7.6. My mom and I work really hard to keep my blood sugars below 200 everyday & my a1c goes down everytime. In May, I got my a1c done and it was 6.7 & i was so proud of myself for getting it that low! For some odd reason though... my endo was not. She wanted it between 8-10 because i'm "just a kid". I guess the questions I'm asking are :

Has anyone else had this happen to them ?

What are some of your A1C's ?

Ah!!!  A1c of 10 is really high!!!!  My A1c the past 2 times has been 6.2.  Definitely try and keep it under 7, just make sure you aren't running into too many lows.

im concerned that you have it reversed...you want a lower a1c not a higher one!

my last a1c was 5.4 and my doctor is very happy with that.

5.4 ... congrats Greg!

But, I would worry that a 5-something a1c would be too low for someone who is 13 b/c they may be going low and it could be more dangerous. But, 8-10? Too high! I think 6.5 - 7 sounds great, but I'm not an endo. (:

I'd have your Mom get a 2nd opinion!

i'm deffinately do not have that reversed. i wouldn't reverse something that important to me. & yeah.. haha my mom did get a second opinion & they never heard of having it at 8 or 10. they said that i'm doing really good for my age!

thanks for all the replies. it means alott! (:

My Daughter is 10 and her endo wants her A1C between 7.0 and 8.1. Anything under 7 for a child her age they feel that she may be having too many lows. 8-10 seems like that may be too high???

It seems like finding the right a1c goal when you're younger is more an art than a science!  But, I'm glad the 2nd doctor didn't recommend 8-10. It seems obvious that would make you feel sick among other problems.

On a somewhat related note, I had a lot of trouble keeping my sugars in check around puberty. You're doing a great job!

haha, thanks!

yeah i'm really glad my mom got a second opinion. i was like woahh that's really high for me. & my mom totally agrees with you. & yes, under 7 may be a little.. low but i just wana have really good blood sugars and not end up like my friends mom. She ended up in a coma because she didnt take care of it.

Okay, so according to my "Understanding Diabetes" book (present me with a problem, and I run straight for the bookshelf!), here are the guidelines:

19 years or older - less than 7.0

13-19 years - less than 7.5

6-12 years - less than 8

under 6 - 7.5-8.5

The books are always a good source. I remember when I was at my younger age of being a diabetic that my goal was to have an a1c of 7.0 or below. I don't think I ever cleared below 6 until more recently. The target range is very important and I find it odd that your doctor was promoting higher a1c's. I would also have your mom ask him his reasoning behind his push. Your endocrinologist may have a valid reason other than you are a kid and need to have a higher a1c.

dont you dare change anything! that is a perfect a1c! i got mine down to 6.1 the first time i went to get it done after being diagnosed, and the doctors didnt like that because in the 3 months before that i was high but in the week before i was having crazy lows. my last a1c was 7.8 and my endocrinologist said that was a bit high.

my endo wants my hba1c below 7.5, and its 9.0 right now. the highest its been was 9.6, which wasn't but 6 months ago. slowly my hba1c is coming down, but not as fast as i want it to.

my last A1C was 9, thats a lil high but i was happy the time before that I was in the hospital w/ DKA and it was 14!!!!! so I was happy w/ 9!! still working on getting it down~

i got ya'll beat, a 10.3 on my last a1c. but im not really doing anything to help it either. im definitly looking at someway to make it better though.

Our son (age 8) just had his first A1c, and it was 6.5%.  Our DE was thrilled (so was I), and said that was exactly where we wanted it to be.

I'm not clear whether the A1c is an indicator primarily of how many high's you're having (as it says in my book), whether it's showing an average (as the posters in the endo's office indicate), or if it can also indicate lows.  Does anyone know exactly what it's showing?

From what I understand it is the average blood sugar for the past 3-4 months.

If your doctor is telling you 8-10% change your doctor asap. That is ridiculous. Your a1c is great and you and your mom are doing a fine job of keeping you healthy. Kudos to you!

Now if only I can get that low! ugh!!! Last one in July 7.3

I would have to agree with the ranges from Mo...when i was younger we shot for low 8's  now anything n the 7s and i will be happy.   I went on the CGS (continous Glucose Sensor) back in april and dropped my A1C from the mid 12's...yea yea i know....to an 8.6.  in my 14 years the lowest i have ever had it was 8.4 a month after starting the pump....the highest...in the 13's.  college, stress, not eating full meals, or testing and only taking lantus did that one to me.  that didnt last long though.  Keep up the good work.

Mo, an A1C is a three month average in percentages of what the blood sugars have been running.  Whether they be high low or normal.  6.5 is great!  the higher the A1C the higher the blood sugars are running.  This is determined by the amount of hemoglobin that is attached to your blood cells.  the higher your blood sugar is the more hemoglobin attaches causing a higher A1C.  I hope that makes sense.

My son is 15.  His A1C in mid-July was 6.4.  (After a 13 something in late April at dx and an 11 something in mid May.)  He was stunned, but the nurse practitioner was happy.  Then, concerned was expressed that he was chasing lows and running too low.  They lowered his Lantus from 15 to 13.  But wanting the A1C to be 8-10 doesn't sound right to me, either.
