Last year for World Diabetes Day my school (University of Florida) was the first college campus in the United States to shine blue for the event and bring awareness to the disease. That week I volunteered on campus and recruited people to get free diabetes screenings. I also attended the lighting ceremony, and we had a campus dinner with diabetics the following week. I was interviewed for a news story on the event, and the link is here:
that is soo cool, i never even knew there was a diabetes day until this year. that tells you how well informed i am about these things and i have had the disease since the late eighties.

haha it was the same with me! i came across it when my co-worker(who had diabetes during one of her pregnancies) mentioned it to me this year.
I'm surprised it isn't more commonly known. I've never heard about it in the media at all. There was an article on the front page the day after about Campbell setting up a plan for Ontario kids to get free pumps and such the day before in celebration of the day..but that was the only thing I heard about it!
I go to the University of Florida too! I attend the College of Pharmacy and I have been working with Mrs. Parker from the Shands Diabetes Center of Excellence on this years upcoming event for World Diabetes Day. We are trying to get even more stuff lit blue this year, hopefully all over Gainesville. Hopefully I'll see you there this year.
Wow. I've been at UF for 2 years now and I had no idea! Unfortunately, I am now wrapping up my masters and I'm about to move to Arkansas to take a job and leaving Gainesville. I really wish I would have known before now! Hopefully there is something out at the University of Arkansas that I can participate with. If not, maybe I should start something!
I heard about WDD last yr but by the time I found out that no group in my area was organizing an event for it, it was to late do anything myself. So this yr I would like to get events to raise awareness about our diease and how it affects us(to all of those who just don't understand us) but I don't have any ideas yet and I have no idea where to start????????
But WDD is on November 14 and the website to go to for more info is worlddiabetesday.org, the website it's self is very cool cause you get to see how other places around the world get to raise awareness, and some of the pic's are just stunning.
just some info and the website, but if anyone has ideas for events on WDD and would like to share that would be great and hopefully give me some direction.
