Recent Joslin Meeting

On Thurs evening I attended a reception in the home of Chris and Hollis Volk in Paradise Valley, AZ for two members of the professional staff of Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston.

Dr. Hillary Keenan told us about the research she has done on the 50-Year Medalists, which includes me. Her most significant finding has been that 66% of the medalists they have studied are still making a little bit of their own insulin. Their bodies keep trying to replace the beta cells that keep being destroyed by the mixed-up immune system. This offers great possibilities if someone can find a way to make the immune system behave properly. Hillary's paper has been epublished by Diabetes journal, and will be published in print form in the next couple of weeks.  There have been similar findings in the cadavers of deceased medalists who have donated their organs.

Dr. Lori Laffel, Chief of the Pediatric, Adolescent, and Young Adult section of the Joslin Clinic told us about the difficulties they have in getting their patients to find time to do the needed BG tests, and about how CGM is helping to solve this problem.

Thanks for sharing, Tom! Sounds like a really interesting meeting :o)

Tom,

Thank you so much for sharing! What did you think about the meeting?

Yep, CGM is a wonderful thing.  :)  Thanks for sharing, Tom.

In addition to the two professionals there were also three people from the Joslin Development Office. I had lunch today with four of them, and Hillary Keenan was presented with a yellow bicycle jersey, symbolic of winning the Beatson Challenge, being the first of four research areas to get a paper published on research supported by my contribution. Michael Sullivan, VP of Development, was the one who came up with the idea of the yellow jersey (Tour de France), related to my experience with bicycle riding.

That's awesome, Tom! You have to feel good about that :o)

Yes, it was a great experience. I'm reasonably sure I've got pictures in my camera (taken by someone else), but I'm not so sure that Juvenation will let me post them.

WOW!   That is exciting news.  After 50 years of D the body still tries to regenerate.  This kind of news keeps me hopeful!  Thanks for sharing it!

Tom, I think we'd all love to see the pictures.  Heck, we've been posting pictures of puppies lately...

You just click on the "Insert Media" button, which is right in the middle of the toolbar.  You can upload them from there.

Looking forward to seeing them!

those are great pictures, tom! love them :o)

Thanks Tom, I enjoyed your report and the pictures. I am going to the June meet-up of the Joslin medalists, in Boston. Will you be there?

This is great Tom and thanks for sharing the pictures too ..

I plan to be there, but I have my doubts that it will be in June. I think May is more likely. That's when it was in 2009. I should have asked Hillary before she left yesterday.
