You can be number one! You sound like a smart and influential guy!
I honestly believe that if I did not have diabetes I wouldn't be as successful as I am today. It helped me gain many characteristics that keep me responsible. I have incredible organizational skills, I prioritize well, manage my time successfully, and take time to myself when I feel like I need it. It's completely innate now, too. People always tell me I have an old soul. I see it differently. I'm just a kid (i hope i still qualify as a kid) who knows how to act like a grown up when it's necessary :)
This made me realize I need to write a blog. It should be up soon. It's about how my parents helped me. Here is the cliff notes version:
Another thing that's been wonderful is that my parents let me deal with diabetes on my own from the day of my diagnosis. They wouldn't let me leave the hospital until I was checking and taking injections by myself. Once I got home they would ask me questions once in a while, but they trusted me 100% to take care of myself on my own. All through school I maintained flawless numbers and did so as a normal kid - eating whatever i wanted, playing whatever sports I wanted, having random sleeping habits. Because my parents put that responsibility in my hands and trusted me with it, I did it. When I wanted to give up, my parents would remind me that numbers are only there for information, and since we know the number we can fix it. While they left the responsibility in my hands, they would help if I asked for it - waking me up once an hour to check when I was sick or needed basal testing, making me eat on sick days. I am forever in their debt because of how they taught me to take responsibility, never to be afraid to ask for help if I want it, and to admit if I did make a mistake so that I could learn from it. Some kids get a dog. I got diabetes. And frankly, I'm more than okay with it.
hey Mrs. Johnson,
Sorry to get back to you so late, been really busy traveling with my baseball team.
I dont really do anything different from you. When i can a game i try to have my blood sugar around 140 because when i start playing it usually goes down around 100 (maybe lower, depends how hot it is outside). I have a bag of snacks i bring to everyone game no matter which sport i'm playing at the time, and i drink orange juice or gatorade during. In a typical baseball game i check my level every inning.
Don't get me wrong i have low and high days and it seems like no matter what i do nothin works. Then there are some days where i can get it almost exactly where i want it. I hope that helped, Just keep trying you'll get it soon. We all struggle with that sometimes so your not alone, trust me.
Good Luck!
