Newly Dx'd PCOS

I was just diagnosed yesterday with PCOS. I’ve had a feeling for a few months that I had it, but even so, the official diagnosis still sucks. I was surprised to find information saying that PCOS and diabetes were so closely related! I never knew before now. So here’s my question: how many of you have it and what kind of treatment do you use?

I don’t have PCOS but your post made me look online to learn more. This is obviously a problem that affects a lot of women with diabetes.

Some of the articles mentioned that PCOS being related to insulin insensitivity. Do you feel like your body is less sensitive than average? Some type 1s have done well on oral diabetes medications that increase insulin sensitivity. Might be something to discuss with your doctor.

Let us know if you find treatment options that help.

I don’t feel like I have insulin resistance, but I have gained about 15-20 pounds in the past year, despite exercising and eating healthily. I’m hopefully starting on a Metformin soon, so hopefully that’ll not only help with PCOS, but also with my blood sugars!

My adopted sister has PCOS and she has been told she is a candidate for type 2 diabetes. It definitely does affect all over hormones and insulin needs. I don’t think it is related to the autoimmune processes that cause type 1 (but definitely affects your insulin needs now) especially if you got type 1 before puberty, since it is related to ovulation. I guess you don’t want to be on birth control since you’re trying to get pregnant…? (Hence the pregnancy group…)
I hope Metformin helps! Good luck!

Thanks, @MaggieJo! I was diagnosed with T1D when I was 20 years old, so after puberty, but I was on birth control pills for 9 years before stopping them in January of 2013. Now I’m wondering how long they were hiding the symptoms of PCOS. I guess I’ll never really know, so I’ve gotta just roll with it!

My doctor, an ob/gyn not a fertility specialist, diagnosed me with PCOS. I am not fully convinced I have it, I just know that I have not been ovulating on my own. The reason I am not convinced is because I don’t have any of the other symptoms. I don’t have a lot body hair, and I don’t even have cyst on my ovaries. So who knows what I have!
