I just finished reading Mary Tyler Moore's new book called "Growing Up Again: Life, Loves and Oh Yeah, Diabetes" (St. Martins Press, 2009). I would like to recommend that all my Juvenation friends borrows it from the library (like I did) and give it a read. It's a quick and easy couple of hundred pages with good-sized print! The only thing I'll tell you is that Mary doesn't like the idea of having anything attached to her body, and therefore does NOT use an insulin pump.
whattts it abouttt?! wel besidess diabetees lolls?!
I just took it out of the library....thanks for the recommendation.
Anything in there about the old Dik Van Dike (mispelled on purpose to fool profanity checker) show days? Man I love that show. It's amazing and she was GREAT in it. I think I might have to read this.

I loved that show too. Believe it or not, Mary was 33 years old when she was diagnosed with Type 1 in 1969, three years after the Dick Van Dyke Show had already ended. The show ran from 1961 until 1966. (That's really old for a Type 1 diagnosis isn't it? In the book she talks about how professional dancers like her were trained to tolerate all kinds of bodily pain and physical problems, and how it's quite possible that she had had T1 symptoms before her formal diagnosis. "The show must go on," they say.) So anyway, there isn't much about the Van Dyke years.
The equally successful Mary Tyler Moore show began a year later in 1970 and ran even longer until 1977. She does tell a few stories about going low during some filmings of the MTM show. Born in December 29, 1936, Mary is 72 year old now, but has only (!) had Type 1 for approximately 40 years... just like ME.
She still looks great!!! I hope you're reading this Mary.
PLEASE join Juvenation so we can ALL friend you!!
Someone please tell Mary to join Juvenation!!!
Back in the Dick Van Dyke days, she was rediculously cute. Easily ranked up there with Marlo Thomas and Elizabeth Montgomery in my book. I remember watching reruns of Dick Van Dyke, That Girl and Bewitched during my first few years of college.
I'll have to check it out!
I checked that book out from the library in June, while my daughter was at Diabetes Camp. It made me laugh out loud, and cry! The first few pages of her talking about unpacking and all the d-gear strewed about was great. It was a really good book, even for those who are not affected by Type 1, I still recommend it to them as an excellent read!
Mom to Hannah DX 8/22/08, Omnipod pumper as of 9/1/09!!
I read the book too and I thought it was funny! :)
