Has anyone been told they have Diabetic Dermapathy?

I have dark spots on my lower legs, when I first noticed them I was exiting a car and thought... "hmm maybe the car had oil or dirt and I must of just gotten dirty"... so I tried wiping it off.  Then I thought, "Is it a bruise"  these questions ran through my mind.  I even went back to my car to clean it - It was not the car.  I could not figure it out.  When I noticed the spots I must of had 30 years with diabetes.  I've now been living with diabetes 34 years.  I do not have pain and the spots started to get darker and I started getting more on both legs.  I spoke to my doctor and he told me it was something normal in diabetic people called "diabetic dermapathy".  He also said that It could almost be compared to women who get dark spots on the face.  He also said my capilleries were broken and natural tattooing occured.  I hate it, I am self conscious about this, especially when I wear dresses.  Does anyone out there know what to do about this.  My Doctor did recommend some ointment but it was to expensive.  Anyone out there has the same? and what did you do?

I haven't heard of this, but an endo once told me I have darkening of the skin around my joints and this is normal w/ T1. Maybe related??

Yea I found I had it a couple months ago. All they told me was there is nothing they can do and not to worry about it which didn't help me any

I agree except I have bruises on my arm
