Feeling A Bit Alone

I’m a 17 year old diabetic. I’ve had this illness for about 10 years, and I’ve only met one other type 1 diabetic around my age. I oftentimes have problems with diabetic burnout and was wondering if there was anyone around my age that would like to talk with me a bit, I could definitely use some friends.

Hi Whitney, I would definitely like to talk to you. I’m actually pretty similar to you, feeling alone and definitely could use some friends. I’m 18 years old and have had diabetes for the last 9 years. Also similar to you I haven’t met hardly anybody around my age either with this illness. I haven’t experienced diabetic burnout until recently and have just been powering through it which has been pretty difficult.

Thanks! It’d be great to get to know someone around my age. Thanks for taking the time to reply to me!

No problem. Same here, I would sure like to get to know someone in my shoes.

How would be a good way to keep in contact?

I believe there might be a direct message option on this site and maybe we could use snapchat or something of the like. That’s the first two I thought of. Do you have any other ideas?

@ladyofdawn Welcome Whitney to TypeOneNation Forum! I hope that after you are here a little while that you will not feel so much alone with your diabetes - the TypeOne. I know it was about 30 years before I found another person with TypeOne with whom I could talk.
And yes Christopher @Chris_stop_her, there is a Direct Message feature on this page - click on your identifier circle [where you may place your picture] at the top right and then select “Message” - enter the user name with whom you want to “talk” and go from there.

Another way to find other people affected by TypeOne is to click on the “Events” tab at the top of this page and then select “JDRF Near You” and enter your zip code.

I hope the best for both of you my daughter is 2 years old and type 1 you guys give me hope that she grows up with someone her age that she can relate to with this difficult illness.Keep your heads up life is full of beautiful surprises.
Type 1 mom❤

Hi Whitney @ladyofdawn! I’m Abby, 16 years old, diagnosed age 7. Welcome to TypeOneNation! I’m so glad you found us. This is a great place to connect with other folks who know what it’s like to live with this condition.
I totally relate to what you’re feeling because I don’t know any other PWD in my area. However–I do have several group chats with teens from all over the world who have T1D! I’d love to add you (and @Chris_stop_her if you’re interested)! Feel free to pm me so we can exchange contact info. I can’t wait to chat with you!

I know what you mean! I’m 18 but was only diagnosed last year, I have a hard time not feeling alone sometimes. My Snapchat is @feminizz if you ever want to talk!

I’ve had diabetes for almost 11 years and I know how it feels. You’ll get through this and message me if you need to I’m am going to be 17 in just a couple months

Hi Whitney I am a little older I’m 33 and I have had type 1 for 17 years . Even now I am still depressed about it sometimes… this morning before work my blood dropped and my hands were shaking as I was drinking juice and then I started to cry … I cried all the way to work. I totally get it it sucks and I know we all could have worse an uncarable disease but it does suck and people who don’t have diabetes doesn’t get it .

Hi Whitney!
Very similar to you, I am 17 and was diagnosed when I was 8. I know a few diabetics but none around my age and no one in my family has it, so I understand feeling alone. I have been through burnout and I thought I was doing better but this year has been super tough. My snapchat is cambria.o19 (letter o, not the number) if you want to add me so we can talk on there:)

Hello,
My name is Tommy, ive been a T1DM for almost 20 years at this point. Im a nurse practitioner, and i know absolutely no one in my life that deals with the things that i have to deal with on a daily basis. I know it sounds odd, since im a health care provider–that i would have anxiety about my disease, but i do, every day. Im in constant turmoil with myself about my health and constantly worried about the worst case scenario.
I recently reached out to my diabetes providers about this and they suggested reaching out to a forum of this kind. Just writing this and seeing all the messages flowing back and forth and the support from all of you to each other makes me feel less alone.
I really hope some of us are able to connect

Cheers,
Tommy
