I've gained about 15 pounds over the last year and I KNOW the major reason for this EXTREMELY unwelcome gain is exercise, or lack thereof. I'd like to start a little thread where all of us somewhere-around-middle age working stiffs can support and laugh at each other as we struggle to fit the time to exercise into our schedules ( or at least the time to serioulsy THINK about it.) Nothing is too little on our exercise scale here, all it takes is some movement. The point is to just get moving. And if you don't, well, let us know anyway and we'll do our best to support you off the couch :)
I'll start. Yesterday I walked around my office and after work I held my recliner down while watching TV. :(
Today I hope to get a walk in after work. I"ll let you know how that goes tomorrow.
I'm with Batts , I think we should bring in everyone here....This is a job for Juvenators ! ha, Janie I am laughing at what you just said because it is kind of like that here,ha...I will try today to exercise because you were kind enough to post this...be back later....or not ,ha :)
Janie, I'm still chuckling from reading your post! I fit into the proposed age bracket... I too could stand to lose about 15-20 lbs. as well as be a lot more active. I am not a gym person; I came to that realization many years ago! I bought myself a Wii system, which I do enjoy, but I get most of my exercise with it simply by wiping off the dust every once in a while. Now that the nicer weather is here, outdoor activity is a little more motivating for me: walking my two Labs (and BTW, I understand your "toss-up" comment in your bio! lol) and gardening, mostly. Also, I don,t try to fit in a time for exercise, but I do try to do just little things when they happen to cross my mind, such as running up and down the stairs in my house five times 9pretty sad to say, but that gets my heart pumping!), taking the stairs when I only have a couple of floors to go up/down, parking a little further away from my destination.
Also, I really enjoy my beer (egads!). I've been trying to cut down lately and I think I've already shed a pound or two!
Oh, and finally, when I decide to snack on potato chips or other fatty foods, I don't grab the whole bag and plop down on the couch in front of the TV. I make a point of doling out one serving into a bowl, put the rest away where I can't see them. THEN plop down...
Oh heck, this is for everyone. It's just that I was reading a bit older post asking everyone what they did for exercise and the answers were like "I ran 8 miles today," or "I went to the gym at 5am and lifted for an hour, got another hour in on the treadmill at lunch and then went to a spinner class and pilates after work." (gulp) That sums up about three months worth of exercise for me! Many of the posters were much younger than me, but I know exercise avoidance afflicts all ages. :P Basically, anyone who fits into the Exercisers Under Achievers but with Good Intentions Club is welcome to chime in.
well then... everyone....if you insist ,ha :) I Love the fun spin you put on this post !!! :) Can't wait to see if their are others like me :( No , we might all be pretty proud of ourselves down the road :)

Hang in there!
Peace.

i went to the gym 3times a week when i had a trainer(sooo expensive, but it was worth it) and running on saturday mornings..stopped doing that, then went back on my own maybe once a week. that's since stopped..me and my bf have a pass to the same gym but we never go(i'm trying to go at least once a week on top of physio & yoga to help my whiplash)..last night i ditched a fusion class with my gf cuz i was tired haha laid on the couch all night instead!
Soo glad you created this. I want to lose about 15-20 lbs too. I know that now that the weather's finally warming up it'll be easier to "move."
For those of us who work in offices all day, there are isometric (that's the one where you don't move, right?) exercises we can do- tightening out stomachs in pulses, pumping our legs under our desks . . . not that I ever do these things - but I think this thread has inspired me to try to start. :)
Ok. So...I took a walk with my husband and our three dogs last night (that's two walks in as many days. I think I'm starting a trend.) We attempted to go to a nearby park to let the dogs off-leash and run in a big empty field. Our dogs are a rather pudgy beagle (Ricky), a black and white lab mix (Lucy), and a Heins 57 mix - my husband says she's part pit and part greyhound, I say she's part pit and part horse (Gracie). We hooked them all up to their harnesses and leashes and my husband took the lead with Ricky and Lucy. I only got Gracie because she's a lot to handle without having another dog on leash to hold onto. I'm walking along, feeling great about the fact that I was actually walking further than the distance from my desk at work to the bathroom, when WHAM! Gracie, apparently not satisfied with my less than brisk pace, lunged to get ahead and completely pulled me off my feet!! I went down hard, but fortunately I survived with just a couple cement burns on the heel of my palm and my right knee, a sprained thumb, and a chunck of skin torn off the tip of the sprained thumb.)
I tell ya...it's enough to keep a person at home on the couch where the biggest threat of physical harm comes from raising the footrest!!!!!
Anyway, I DID get a good walk in before going on the GracieExpress, so at least there's that. And next time, my husband gets to walk the horse-dog. I'll stick with the fat beagle and his languid sister.
Great jobs everyone! Remember, every little bit helps. Hang in there!!
Janie, I'm happy as well that you decided to start a thread for this. I would love to lose 20-25 lbs, I cut out diet pop(soda) about 2 mos ago and have lose 10-15 lbs which is great but I would like to lose the additional weight. Right now it's hard to get up and get in the exercise that I should be getting for 2 reasons the 1st being that right now I'm off on a medical leave of absent from work because of having so many problems with keeping my bg stable(so it's back to relearning everything for using a pump) and the 2nd reason is that I've just gotten lazy.
Like Nads I have a lab and should be walking her everyday but instead alot of the time I just put her out in the back yard( I know it's sad for her). And like Nads I'm not a gym person so I normally do like to walk, go mountain biking & this is going to be my 1st yr gardening.
So once I reeducate myself and have support I will be able to get active again to reach my goals.
A lot of people don,t consider gardening to be actual exercise, but I find that it is indeed physically demanding! Once I get started in my gardens, I'm usually in there for 3-4 hours. I have to remember to adjust the basal rate on my pump (generally about -20 or -30%) or else the only thing to pull me out of the gardens is a low BG!
Janie, your story proves my theory that EXERCISE IS DANGEROUS! LOL I'm glad you escaped any major injusries, but even your minor ones do not sound very pleasant. Ouch!
Luckily my dog only weighs about 16lbs -- but she Really pulls for her size.
So, I don't know the name of it - but you'll sometimes see straps around a dog's snout when they are being walked -- this isn't a muzzle - it's actually a kind of lead that' s supposed to help the dogs that really pull more controled. Maybe that would keep the "horse" at bay.
Another trick is to keep treats on you - so the dog is more interested in being near you (aka the treats) than pulling your arm off down the street.
little too intense for me. back problems and possibly arthritis in my right knee now(BLAH!)!
I'm losing my license for 3months(stupid ICBC and their graduated licensing program) so I'm going to HAVE to walk to/from work more often, which I think is going to help me a lot. It's either I walk or I spent $10 on a cab or I get up at 6am to get a lift with the bf on his way to work and get downtown at 7am(start work at 830am) haha. i think that'll help me get back to doing sprints/jogging around the lake(5km) every Saturday morning.
Hey meme, here's the info site: http://icbc.com/driver-licensing/getting-licensed/graduated-licensing
this is about the rules when you have your "N": http://icbc.com/driver-licensing/getting-licensed/graduated-licensing/novice-stage
Pretty much, since I got a ticket when I was 19 and lost my license for 3months..every time I get pulled over(which is max once every year, year & a half) i lose my license again and start the 2year "N" period from scratch, but the points don't get erased/invalid. The stupidest part is that ICBC is the ONLY insurance company in BC, and they gave me a Safe Driver discount of $15/mo last year(after a lady at ICBC said I wouldn't qualify for)...but when they take my license away it's because i'm "not a safe driver" because they see I have points on my record already. I'm pretty pissed. My friend never drives(maybe once a month to give her mom a ride to work and back) because she's a nervous driver..none of us will let her drive even if she gets to borrow a car for the day and she's getting her full license before me..just because she never drives so she's never been pulled over! i have waay more experience than her and am not nervous on the road, but i get punished. haha.
I need to drop 40+ lbs! I am getting a bike soon so I can ride to the school at lunch time to give Riley her insulin. That way I can get healthier and save gas!
