When I was on vacation in Lake Tahoe and Las Vegas my body would get so hot and sweaty because of the extreme heat conditions, that I had to actually change my pump site more often. Twice the site just fell off my body. Has this ever happened to anyone else?
My recommendation is if you are going to hot climates make sure you bring enough pump supplies because you may need to change as often as I did. I went through about 6 sets in a week! That is very rare for me. I have been to most of the carribean islands and never had this problem. It was so weird.
Yeah. This has happened to me. I live in South Carolina. Bad thing is that I still have a hard time remembering to bring extra sites. Did you notice more lows? I always get low a lot more when the summer heat comes around.
im more prone to this than most ive noticed because i use my butt and the clothing makes everything hotter and i tend to sweat more there. i keep IV preps on me all the time but sometimes just cooling down the skin works better.
This normally happens for me whenever I sweat. Regular water etc. doesn't bother the adhesive for my site, but anytime I do something where I'm sweating a lot, the sweat eats right through the adhesive and the site falls off. Pain in the ass for sure. To combat the run away site, I will put tape (like the kind you'd tape your ankle with) over the site to reinforce it and it usually won't fall off. Sometimes the sweat eats through that too and I just have to change my site anyway.
If you haven't tried the medical tape solution, I'd say give it a whirl
Tape hates my skin. IVprep, skin tac etc.. nothing sticks when I am sweating. Its annoying. I need like super duper crazy skin tac for really sweaty people lmao
A trick i have learned is to fd a tape that holds up in the heat...i prefer tagaderm myself...then place that down first, then your site then if you do tape it down on top...this gives smething else for the tape to grip other than your sweaty body. There are also more things out that help make your skin stickier...call your pump company, i know minimed has it, and ask if they have a tape sample package. Minimed does and it includes a few different tapes as well as adhesives. As for going low the heat will makyour body absorb insulin faster, thats why dr.s say not to stay in hot tubs for more than 5 minutes at a time because you will absorb your insulin and have more lows in the heat.

Kimberly, I'm not quite sure I understand the hot tub thing... If heat makes your body absorb insulin faster, that would result in the body not having enough insulin to cover the glucose, wouldn't it? in which case, the BGs should go high, not low...
I always just assumed that the heat can make you feel low (like in hot tubs) when you're actually just right or even high.
If you can explain this further, I would be interested... Here in Canada, during the dead of winter, there's nothing better than getting into an outdoor hot tub when it's snowing!
I heard somewhere about putting...er, I think Metamucil? That substance that is whitish and is used to combat mild stomach issues...it supposedly dries out the area...
I sprayed Arrid one time...nothing doing on spray antiperspirant. It seems to chemically risky somehow. I use these IV preps...you have to scrub the area and let it dry...I didn't know about the whole let it dry aspect. I used to wave my hand a few times and then put the new site in.
Another thing: one of those single hole punchers comes in handy with sites that have tubing...I take a site tape, fold it in half, then punch one hole in the middle. The tape then goes where the little remaining I guess canula is...and you can put the detachable site connector back on without having to mess with tape.
But I'm like Gina...not a tape in the world will stick in certain situations. I had a site move today...but I seem to be still receiving insulin, so I'm not messing with it. There's that lint circle that goes around sites after three days or so...and there's two now...it's weird. But then, it could be that the heat helped keep my levels down, so I am staying on top of my BG in the next few hours. Long post...ya'll just made me think about a lot.
And a hot tub in snowy weather sounds amazing. I love to sit in a hot car for a few hours...sometimes, on occasion, being hypothyroid has its advantages.

Ahhh. I remember when my sister and I used to spend the night at one of our friends houses, who had a hot tub in her backyard. Whenever it would start pouring down rain, we would get our swimsuits on and hop in the hot tub with the rain coming down on us. I absolutely love the rain, but I'm not a big fan of being really wet and cold. So staying warm in the hot tub but still being out in the rain feels great. I love it. (=
This post had nothing to do with the topic, but your hot tub in the snow thing brought back memories.
OMG- One time I called Minimed to tell them about my tape issue and they told me to spray antiperspirant on my skin and then put the tape down. In my head I was like yea umm OK! are you nuts buddy? I thought he was seriously crazed!
Metamucil sounds interesting. I have some maybe I should try that.
Anyway, good tips though... those sound interesting.
BTW: I would love a hot tub right about now, my hubby is freezing me out with the A/C!!!
back on topic...Gina I had our experience last night...ran for 65 minutes and when I was done, my site was practically falling off. The only thing that was keeping it on was the actual catheter and the adhesive part around it. Got home and did some emergency medical tape work. Should be good til tomorrow when I'll have to change it :)

The same thing happens with my brother he will get really sweaty and his set will fall off. So his initial reaction is to go tape it back but it never seems to work. So he ends up having to replace the set. They really should make some type of glue or something for these situations.

Agreed. The issue with changing your site when this occurs is that you're using another site and depending on how often this happens, you might have to re-order supplies more often...that might not matter to some whose insurance covers 100%, but at the moment, mine is covered at 80% so I still end up paying about $220, and starting 9/1/09, we're switching to Aetna...which I heard is much worse than BC/BS as far as copays are concerned. We'll see. Still curious about trying the duct tape solution
