Beware of toothpaste in the shower

here's a somewhat related question to pump users: do you bolus to make up for the basal that you did not receive while showering? i don't, because i'm never in the shower for more than 15 minutes, and it would be like a bolus of .15 units. i have read of other people doing that, though.

See, this is the one thing that I'm not sure I like about the Ping. I just switched yesterday from the Cozmo to the Ping, for those of you who don't know. While I love the Ping and think it's a lot better than the Cozmo is most ways, the one thing I don't like is the fact that with the Cozmo, you would tell the pump that you were disconnecting, and you could deliver a certain percentage of the basal that you would be missing, based on how active you'll be. So, if I was going to disconnect for an hour or so, I could deliver 50% of my basal for that hour and then when I reconnect, you can deliver another percentage of the remaing basal that was missed. This was nice because it prevented me from having a high later on. With the Ping, though, you can't do that. You just have to disconnect and correct later.

that's a pretty cool feature with the cozmo. i would hope that it's just a small problem in comparison to the advantages that one receives while using the ping. what are your thoughts on it so far? i've had a paradigm for three years. i have never had a problem with it. the only inconvenience i've had is the recall of infusion sets a few weeks ago. i love the paradigm, but i am very intrigued by the ping. how is the battery life? it uses a lithium ion battery, right?

Tanner-

I love the Ping. It definitely outweighs the Cozmo in pretty much everything, except that one disconnect feature. It's waterproof, which is great. I even went swimming with it on today. I was really nervous wearing it, I have to admit, but it was fine after an hour of swimming. I love the meter remote, so that I don't have to deal with testing on one machine and then getting my pump out for the bolus. I like the Inset infusion sets so much better than the Cleos that I was using with the Cozmo. I always seemed to have problems with the Cleos- blockages, pain when inserting, not sticking, getting pulled out easily- but the Insets are great. The adhesive sticks so much better. I always had to use SkinTac every time with the Cleos, but I didn't use if for the Inset that I'm wearing now, and it's still sticking as good as it was yesterday, even after swimming. So, it's great in comparison with the Cozmo. I've never used the paradigm, so I don't know how it measures up to that.

i'm glad you like it, Sarah. i couldn't imagine hopping in the pool while connected, haha. i would actually still disconnect if i had the ping... i tend to play pretty rough while swimming. i would hate to bang it on the side of the pool or something. i use skintac right now. amazing stuff. did you have to do anything special with regard to your insurance? i could see insurance companies balking at someone trying to get a new pump if their current one works fine.

p.s. thanks for not accepting my friend request on here :P

Ok.

1. this thread is hilarious.

2. Fred's shirt is hilarious

3. My husband and his whole family brush their teeth in the shower and I thought they were the weirdest people for doing that.

4. Now, I brush my teeth in the shower LOL Not all of the time, like 80%. It does save time when you are in a rush, you would be amazed how many things you can clean at once LLLLLLLLLLOLLLLLLLLLLLL

5. I can't believe Greg spits on his pump sites.

6. I think I am done making a list LOL

First off, I just accepted your request! No need to worry. (=

As far as the insurance thing goes. Since the company that made the Cozmo just recently went out of business, Animas (which makes the Ping) started a deal with Cozmo users, where we could get the Ping for only $200, instead of the normal $900. We transfer over the remaining warranty that we had on our Cozmo (I just started a little over a year ago, so still have almost 3 years left) to the Ping, and get the $700 discount. It was a pretty sweet deal.

wow. that's awesome. i'll be honest -- i know very little about my insurance. i got my pump right before i started college. i never really asked my parents about the cost of it. i don't even know my insurance will cover animas pumps. i'd love to get a ping, though. they look amazing.

i thought my paradigm had bit the dust earlier today. i was outside and it started beeping like crazy. i looked down to see a "motor error" message on the screen. luckily, it was just the battery. i had never actually let my pump die completely. i guess i didn't hear the low battery alarm.

It does save time...man, though...I wonder if that has been a contributing factor to the sudden here one minute dangling the next pump site unsticking.

Wow...really? I wear a cozmo. I have been treating it very gingerly due to the out of business thing. I think, though, that cozmo should have some manner of obligation to people whose lives depend on their products...

Wouldn't it be nice if there was just a dang pump if you needed one? I like my cozmo, even though it is precariously delicate (or I am very clumsy)...here's to hope...may it persevere.

Yeah, we had some representative call us and tell us about the offer. I have another friend who used a Cozmo too and got the same deal. I think the offer expired at the end of July or something, though. That's strange that you didn't know anything about it.

i wear a cozmo too. the offer expired yesterday, but i chatted with animas and they are still going to let me take advantage of the deal. if you are switching from cozmo to animas, it actually doesn't go through your insurance. they send you the ping, you pay $900, then when you turn in your cozmo pump to them, they give you $700 back (that's how it was explained to me). i have 2.5 years left on my warranty with cozmo so at the end of that contract, i can choose to upgrade to a new ping for $900 if i want.

cozmo does have to honor your contract until it expires. meaning, if you break your pump (or it breaks on its own), they HAVE to replace it. they also have to provide you with supplies, extra parts, and everything you will need to keep the pump running until the end of your contract. when your warranty expires with them, they don't have to continue supplying you with anything.

there was a website (can't remember it now) that compares costs of pumps. animas and medtronic were the 2 most expensive being $5,000-$6,000 each. i wanna say the cheapest was omnipod at under $1,000 but i can't remember for sure. because pumps have now been proven to improve diabetes and decrease risks of complications, most insurances will let you get one and pay for most of the cost. i typically pay around $500-$900 every time i get a new pump (cozmo is my 3rd).

personally, i hate my cozmo. it's a piece of junk that has already been recalled or replaced 3x since i got it a year and a half ago. this is why i am taking advantage of the animas offer. $200 isn't bad for an almost new pump... and it comes in PINK! :D:D

how much does the ping cost?

$5-6,000

I have an Animas 2020 and it's 7,000. I think. It's water proof.

if im in a hurry i will brush my teeth in the shower.

I started brushing them in the shower. So far I haven't ended up like Greg! :) lol.

Maybe Saran Wrap would help? If someone has already mentioned this, my apologies...(hee hee)...

Batts, if someone does accidentally get hooked on your tubing, you can clutch your side and make an "AAaaaaagghghhh" sound. It scares the daylights out of anyone...I wouldn't recommend it with anyone other than one of those precious, rare, beautifully even tempered, non diabetic but understanding friends. For some reason, it tends to elicit violent reactions when people realize you are joking with them.

And I HATE it when the pump falls and dangles from the tubing...as we say down here, "It just ain't right."

I used to get up from the couch and let my pump drag behind me to get my significant other's goat. He's figured it out by now and laughs with me.

And not only guys brush their teeth in the shower. I do, too, and I am not a guy.

haha, i do this all the time. if someone is playing around and pokes me in the side where i happen to have my canula, i usually freak out and act like they almost killed me. my close friends know that i'm just playing, but i still catch people off guard. their reactions are hilarious.
