Just curious as I have noticed it seems a lot of us were dx'ed in ER / ICU. I know it was in ICU, DKA, for me. LOL How about anyone else??????
I went to my regular doctor first because I wasn't in DKA or very close to death or anything. From there I was told to go straight to the hospital, so I'm assuming that I went to the ER, although I have no memory of it.
I went to my regular doctor because I'd been feeling so crappy for so long. He dx'd me and then sent me to the ER where they determined I had DKA. So then they sent me to the ICU. So I guess I hit them all! lol!
I went to my college health center, they told me there was no way I could be diabetic because i looked too healthy and sent me to get bloodwork done at a larger college's health center, they told me my blood glucose level was 428 and sent me to the ER, where I sat for several hours, then they took me to the third floor where I got to spend the weekend. No ICU for me, cuz i was not in DKA. But my A1c was 17!
i was sent straight to the ER..i had a blood sugar over 1000, so im poistive it was DKA. Oh and today, at 5pm, i will have been diabetic for 3 years exactly.

[/quote]for me: pediatrician's office, after a "clinitest" sample.
My buddy was feeling sick a few years ago so I diagnosed him in his living room with my meter - no co-pay!
I took Brandan to the doc because his "stomach virus" got worse. He was transported to a children's hospital and diagnosed with DKA by the ER physician. I don't remeber his BG, somewhere in the 600s, I think.
mom took me to the clinic cuz I was so thirsty all the time, etc etc and they did my bloodtest in the office or something, and it was 40, so they sent my mom and me to the ER. and then I spent two weeks in hospital, apparently winning the hearts of all the nurses cuz i was so sweet and was so brave i did my own needles when they asked me to try(which stopped once I left the hospital). haha.
We took Ri to the urgent care which is where her PC was as well. He didnt see her that day but they ended up giving her a breathing treatment even tho her lungs were clear but she said she couldnt breath. They checked her for strep and said it was positive. They gave her liquid antibiotics thinking it would be easier on her. That was monday around 11. I staid up almost all night with her to help her and feed her. She was hungry but could only stay awake for a min or two then back out. I took the boys to school the next day and had to carry her she just wouldnt really wake up. So a little before my hubby came home for lunch I got her in the shower sitting down and I was trying to wake her up she just wouldnt she was falling over and I had to hold her up. So when he got home I said I am taking her to the ER this just isnt right and more than strep. With in seconds they had her in the back and tested her blood sugar before they even had the IV in her. They said her blood sugar is 500 something she is diabetic. I didnt even hear the full number. They gave her the tiniest amount of insulin and asked which hospital I wanted her flown to. I wish now that I would have picked Denver but there is no way I could have gotten up there with her it was hard dealing with the 45 min to Co springs. She was DKA and in the peds ICU they told me by morning she should be back to herself. Nope it wasnt until the next night more than 24 hours after they started to get insulin in her that she even really woke up. We almost lost her and that still scares the crap out of me.
Right before 6th grade I started loosing alot of weight, always thirsty, urinating alot, tired, grumpy, etc. All the classic signs. At first when my mom would call the doc's office they that maybe I was lacking protein or something and to give me peanut butter and crackers for a snack twice a day. Well it finally got so bad that the doc told my mom to bring me into the office. He did a urine test and came into the room with us with his head down and told my mom that I was spilling sugar into my urine. He then explained what that meant and that we need to go to Children's Hospital right away. Thankfully I was not to the point of going to the ER but I was very very close.
I was sick for weeks. I was seven years old. Three different doctors told my mom three different things. First, it was the stomach flu. Then it was just stress! Then a pediatrician actually ran some tests and called my parents that night telling them to take me to the ER, where I was taken by ambulance to the Children's Hospital. BG 800! They kept me for a week to train my family and myself.
I remember coming home from school in fifth grade and going to my grandma's house. I was standing by her sink and I passed out. Before that I was drinking a lot of fluids, going to the bathroom a lot, losing a lot of weight, and getting a lot of headaches. So, we went to the pediatrician and he ordered blood work. I tested at 313. Then we knew! I ended up spending a week in the hospital getting used to giving myself shots and checking my blood sugars and learning how to eat!
I was 17 years old, ran high school track. My times were getting slower and slower and I was drinking anything I could. Finally my mother took me to the doctor, pediatrition. He thought I had the flu, sent me home but asked that I get a blood test at the lab on the way home. When we got home the phone was ringing. My glucose was around 600. They sent me to Childrens Hospital of Orange County the next day. I was the oldest kid in the hospital. They had a great program to teach t-1's at the time. This was in 1972. At CHOC they mixed the population. I was on the same floor as kid's dieing from cancer and other horrible things. I found out then that what I had wasn't so bad. Even with the archaic stuff they had back then, they told me I could live well into my 50's with this disease. Needless to say, it is even better today:)
Hey Dan small world. I was in OC (not hospital) at the same time in HB. I just waited till I was 52 before joining Club 1 LOL
well at the time i was 3 1/2 years old. I asded my mom how it want and she told me that one day I was sckaping ice off the car window and eating it. (it was in the winter time) So they made a appent with my doccter and they seen him and they send us to the hopistal. And from there I think i was just in the ER I dont think I was in IUC or anything like that. but than I had 2 older brother's too that were in school. I think i need staning the weekend there or longer maybe.
i started out at the pediatrician's office because my mom thought i had the flu. the doc told my mom she could either drive me to the hospital, or he would call an ambulance. she took me to the ER, they took me to ICU, then i went to regular acute care. 8 days total in the hospital. diagnosing BG was over 1,000 with DKA. i spent christmas and new year's in the hospital. boo.
I am glad we're all here. Some scary stories
After feeling the symptoms for a couple of months, I went to sick bay. The corpsman told me I was just tired and had jet lag etc. (I had arrived in japan a week or so earlier). About a week later I went back and this time saw a doctor. Without doing any tests or anything, just by asking questions, he figured out what it was. Told me to come back the next morning for a test to make sure. It consisted of a fasting bs by blood taken out of my arm. Then I had to drink a bottle of sugar water. Then I had more blood taken out 30 minutes later and then an hour later. it was supposed to go on once an hour for 4 hours. After a couple of tests they said I could quit because I definitely had it.
I was then admitted to hospital and given my first dose of 10 Units of NPH.
If this sounds like quacks, it wasn't. Just the way it was in 1977!

Yeahh, mine is a bit similar, I was almost 25 months, and i had a bad diaper rash, and they really didn't know what was wrong with me, i was thirsty, used the bathroom a lot, and had a bad diaper rash. While we were at kids r us, my mom got a call, saying rush her to city of hope, where they JUST SAVED me, i was really close to being in a diabetic coma!! my bg was over 800, and i stayed in the hospital for 8 long days... to an extant im glad i was younger, because it would have been harder for me to adjust if i was older!
