Although I'm not the moderator for this website so perhaps it's not my place to say anything, I feel compelled to remind you that this website is intended to provide support and helpful advice. I can appreciate your views about this snack subject, but to suggest that the rest of us do not have worthwhile "blood, sweat and tears" jobs? In my opinion, that is pushing it a bit too far.
I would suggest that you take into consideration the other members' thoughts and feelings when you are replying to a post. Also, maybe the "blogging" feature is one that you would like to explore; it'll allow you to vent without being disrespectful.
Sorry, I just had to speak up.
Everyone views their job differently. While phsycial labor has only been a portion of my jobs in the past, I still say I have a lot of blood sweat and tears in what I do :o) I work very hard to try to help the community stay happy and healthy. Wolf is entititled to his opinion, just as everyone else is, even if we don't like or agree with them. I've said this before, but I think life would be incredibly boring if everyone agreed with me. It keeps things interesting. :o)
For some, low carb snacks are enough to satisfy hunger until the next big meal. For others, possibly Wolf (who might do a lot of physical labor), low carb snacks simply aren't enough to meet his needs. I worked at a summer camp for 4 summers. It was 3 months--the entire summer--and I never had a chance to sit down. For me, low carb snacks simply weren't cutting it at the time because there was a lot of physical activity, and I was burning through all the calories I consumed. Now, my job is a little more sedentary--though it does require me to be physically active at times, so I'm happier with eating less.
Everyone is different! I love cheese which is low carb, but I also really like to pair it with some crackers. Working in a diabetes clinic, I've seen just about everything in regards to eating habits and diabetes care. What works for some, may not work for others.

Heaven forbid we be able to express our personal views and opinions on a discussion board which has been developed for exactly that.
Don't get me wrong guys... I love engaging in candid discussions. I just feel (and, as you've pointed out, I'm entitled to express my feelings!) that there is a certain way to express oneself, without putting down others. Again, in a nutshell (reminder: I love nuts! LOL), I like to call this RESPECT!
Paul-
I love WASA rye crackers, also! Throw some cheese and turkey on them, and it's a great low carb snack!
mmmmmmm! I love me some WASA rye crackers with turkey and cheese!!!!!
My personal fav is suger-free instant jello pudding. I know, it sounds nasty, but it's SO GOOD!!! And you get a HUGE bowl for 6 carbs and (I think) 2 grams of fat. Yum!
Hard boiled eggs are good, too. (=
Shrimp cocktail by far!
a piece of sandwich ham with creamcheese spread on it...it is so good!!!!!
I totally agree with you Gina. Yogurt, nuts, string cheese and carrots are a couple of my favorite snacks but i love almost any snack.

This website is also intended to allow people to say whats on their mind and how they feel so others can respond how they wish. im not pushing anything too far. im aggrovated about what to eat and what can keep me stable at my job. ive tried all these foods and they dont work for me at all. i didnt say everyone needed a job like mine. i stated that if others had a job like mine....maybe they would be in the same boat im in.
i wasnt being disrespectful. am i not allowed to have days where im just annoyed and aggrovated with diabetes and just trying to find an answer? where else am i going to go to talk about these things?
Wolf,
What do you do for a living, again? Had you sai that you were a carpenter?
|If so, generally what kind of work are you doing... framing, finishing, etc?
How long is your day generally? Do you get coffee and lunch breaks on a
regular schedule? Perhaps someone might have some concrete (you're
not a mason, are you) suggestions on how to better handle your sugar.

Paul
[/quote]Paul i do carpentry and construction. And carpentry its anywhere from framing to roofing and even masonry. i was doing concrete work all day yesterday. I usually do a 10 hour day. We get the regular lunch breaks. I eat my lunch regularly. no insulin shot and i usually get low a few hours later. the lantus has been doing great. but a few hours after lunch...with good sugars...i get really hungry and i eat wheat/cheese crackers and some low carb lil snacks. but im ready for a full meal at that point. and i cant shake it off until i actually eat. them im regular the rest of the night. its the lunch to dinner gap where im having a problem. i can take a break whenever i want for the most part.
Is it possible that perhaps you would benefit by eating a "bigger" lunch with more slow acting carbs (low GI foods) and fat content? Things like spaghetti, brown rice, yogurt, beans, chili, with a hamburger and some cheese? What do YOU normally eat for lunch?
i usually have a ham and cheese sandwich on wheat bread. and some peanut butter crackers. i think i need a more filling lunch. but i do not want to over do it and have my sugar skyrocket. the whole "moderation" of food theory. my metabolism must be really high.
It's really a very healthy lunch and definitely one of my favorites. Most of your carbs are coming from the 2 slices of wheat bread (12g carbs each) and from the peanut butter crackers (22g for 6 crackers). The ham and cheese have almost no carbs and therefore do almost nothing to comoensate for your insulin, exercise and fast metabolism. Perhaps the easiest thing to add first would be a piece of fruit. Plums are good because they have a very low GI. Vegetables are good too so you might try throwing some lettuce on your sandwich, but this won't do as much as the piece or two of fruit. Add things a little at a time because I don't think you need a huge adjustment. Fruits are also good because they're filling.
great advice paul! wolf, i agree with paul. if you try eating a little more at lunch, you might find you aren't as hungry before dinner. foods that have more fats, proteins, and fibers will slow down your digestion and fill your tummy, keeping you fuller for longer. i agree fruits and veggies are a good addition, i would try some dip with them to add some fat and protein. you could also considering making a bigger sandwich, using more meat and cheese. it sounds like you are working pretty hard throughout the day, so you are probably burning all your energy as you consume it.
i hope our suggestions help you. good luck!
PS. everyone has their "aggravated" days. just a couple weeks ago i was nearly in tears i was so frustrated with life, diabetes, and everything with them. this is a good place to vent as most of us understand the feeling. because this is on the internet and we can't hear your voice or see your face (we can only read your words) we can't always tell your tone of voice through the computer. it's very easy to misinterpret what someone might be saying.
hope tomorrow is a better day for you! good luck :o)
