Ok so I am 23yrs old and this question has been running through my head recently. is it better to find a girlfriend with type 1(like me) or a non diabetic..I have never dated any1 with diabetes, before or after I was diagnosed and I mean Im not knocking woman and other people who dont have diabetes but I think that it might be easier to understand and connect on a better level if both people were diabetics. On the other hand if one controls it better than the other I could see problems arising so basically I was jw if any1 had any advice on dating some1 with type1 or not. Thanx for the help everyone!!
i have never dated another diabetic. the ability to understand, empathize, and related doesn't have to come from another diabetic. my ex was amazing when it came to diabetes - he bought books, asked me questions, and learned everything he possible could about it. he wanted to learn how to use my pump and do a blood test so he could help me if he needed to. after awhile he recognized my symptoms of highs and lows and helped keep me calm so i could treat myself (out of range numbers make me a big grumpypants). when it came to diabetes, he was simply wonderful. so, out of my own personal experience, i know it's very possible to find a non-diabetic who understands diabetes. obviously, though, that wasn't enough to keep the relationship going. haha. :o)
imo, it would probably be better if you just found someone you like, and who likes you.
best of luck

haha, yeah that too :o)
I'd imagine it would be hard to find another T1 to date. It's hard enough to find the right person, period. Are there T1 dating sites?
My husband doesn't have T1, but he doesn't seem to think living with me is an issue. (:

agreed. whether they are T1 or not, you just need to find someone who you care about and who cares about you back. if they aren't a T1 but they care about you, they will learn what they need to know and will give you support regardless.
personally, i don't care if they have T1 or not. I've hung out with T1 guys..and they are no different than non-T1's..they can be assholes or they can be awesome. it's the same with T1 women..some of us are bitches and some of us are awesome. T1 has nothing to do with it.
Batts.... did you learn the secret password to get past the swear filter? :D

i guess so? i totally expected those words to be starred out so i didn't bother looking haha.
It shouldn't be about dating someone with diabetes or without.....it should be about being with someone you enjoy being with. Diabetes shouldn't be the tie that binds!!!! If you find the right person, they will enjoy being with you no matter what! Good Luck!
@Dan Find someone that you love, are friends with, that you can communicate with and that you can work with to get through life's challenges. The rest in unimportant.
In my 21 years of being Type 1, I have yet to find anyone that really gets it (diabetic or not). We all have different stories, different symptoms, etc. The second I realized that I was never going to find someone exactly like me and accepted it, things got a lot easier.
Live your life, take care of yourself and the rest will fall in to place.
