So, is it safe for someone with Type 1 and on an aspirin a day to get a tattoo???
Certainly!
What's important is properly caring for it to avoid infection. Your artist will give you instructions for how to care for your tatt during the healing process.
I have 2 and have never experienced an issue with either of mine. :)
Thanks for the advice C!! Good to see you are still on here! I haven't been around for a while.....
C, Is awesome! I am glad she is still around as well because I have no idea about tats....
Like most issues, think you're supposed to hold off on getting a tattoo if your overall blood sugars are running high. It's just because it makes you more prone to infection.
Thanks for the info jennagrant!!
There are actually a lot of Diabetics that get the words Type 1 Diabetic tattooed on their wrists, and use that as their medical alert bracelet. I'm not a tattoo person, but I've seen many T1D's with tattoos.
Good control and taking care after it’s done, no problems! I got my 1st tattoo after my dx. it is my medical alert, done on my inside left arm, where they do IV’s! I have gotten 2 more and haven’t had any problems.
I’m curious about how common it is for PWDs to get a medic alert tattoo. Several years ago I wrote a very short post about my daughter considering a diabetes tattoo and it was one of the most popular post EVER on my blog. How may folks on TypeOneNation have gotten inked with a T1D tattoo vs. something else (like a hula girl named Marge)? Sound off.
I agree as long as you follow the artists care instructions you will be good to go. I have three and they have All healed really well. Just make sure whoever is doing the tattoo has a good reputation because that can make a big difference. If it’s not done properly it can cause problems.
What kind of problems, like infections? blood poisoning? BTW, I am deathly afraid of getting a tattoo but, I like creating them as I am a designer !

@gina Yeah if its not a sterile environment it puts you at more of a risk for getting an infection. Now the blood poisoning, I don’t know how that happens. I love my tattoos and am getting ready to get my 4th. I mean come on being T1D were kinda used to needles haha. But I don’t blame you I was really nervous on my first one.
I like looking at them better ! LOL
@gina
True I know a lot of people that would rather just look too, haha. That’s cool that you like to design them though. I am kind of artsy too but I don’t really have the imagination for tattoos. I like to draw landscapes and houses.
That’s so cool me too! You should join the Artists with Diabetes Group that we have.
