I WANNA GET A DIABETIC TATTOO. IM GOING TO ASK MY PHYSICIAN ABOUT WHAT PART OF THE BODY HE RECOMMENDS GETTING MY TATTOO. BUT I WANNA HERE FROM DIABETICS THEMSELVES. :) ANY COMPLICATIONS? THINGS I SHUD BE VERY CAUTIOUS OF? ANY TIPS YOU GUYS HAVE WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED :) AND IM HAVING TROUBLE ON DECIDING HOW I SHUD DESIGN MY DIABETIC TATTOO.......
i have three tattoos(four if you count the fact my 4th tattoo is a cover-up of a previous tattoo my foot). i had no problems with any of them, except my foot swelled for three days..but it's normal for a foot tattoo to swell a bit for a few days after and the swelling amount depends on the size of the tattoo; otherwise i had no problems. all of them healed in the time i was told they would.
all i did was let my tattoo artist know at the first appointment to book it and talk about the design. i tested before and during my appointment, made sure i had eaten a big breakfast as the stress can make you drop..but can also make you go high, and i had to watch my bloodsugars while they healed, and i used "vegan"/all natural tattoo lotion i got from one of the shops i've been too instead of buying junk from the drugstore.
i didn't talk to any of my doctors before getting any of my tattoos or any of my 11 peircings. as long as you're in control you should be fine(i don't have the best control, but after 16years i have no complications and no signs of complications, and my a1c isn't perfect, but it's a lot better than when i was younger). if you're a newly diagnosed or have been having bloodsugar problems/complications, best to talk to your doctor first though.
follow the instructions they give you, don't ask friends. if you're not sure, talk to the shop and talk to a doctor as well.
most importantly, make sure the place you go to is CLEAN and professional. it's a good idea to ask around about the shops in your town to get an idea of which ones you should avoid and should ones are recommend and from there, look into them and their artists. DON'T get it done by someone in their home. make sure they are a licensed tattoo parlor and even ask how they sterilize their equipment, it can't hurt to ask.
You should be ok. However, diabetics do take a little longer to heal. Especially on the feet or legs. I got my first one when I was 19.

My avatar is my medical alert tattoo. I got it about one year after being dx'ed. I have had not any problems and got a 2nd one for the birth of my granddaughter. Everything is fine. My only word of advice is just have good bs control, my last a1c was 5.7 on MDI. Oh, as far as location mine is inside right forearm, where the paramedics would look to put in an IV. I asked a paramedic about it and he said it was a great place for an alert. I also ask what he would do, one look at the tattoo and he said the first thing he would do if I was found unconscious would be to check my blood sugar first then IV. Works for me!!!LOL have other pics of my tattoo shoot a friend request if you would like to see bigger pictures. Almost forgot my tattoo is a version of medical alert symbol, snake around staff of life. Syringe instead of staff of life and bio hazard instead of the blue star. Any more questions I am willing to answer help!!
Location should be entirely up to you. I have noticed different areas hurt more than others, but this should not be a factor if you really want a tattoo. The single most important thing you can do is pick a good artist. Don't let price be an issue.
I have 4...the legs are the worst healing, but it can be done. My doc suggests I talk with him first and he usually puts me on antibiotics before to help prevent infection. I have 2 on my leg and 2 on my stomach/pelvis. Those healed the best and quickest. But for sure talk to your doctor and put it where you want it to be...just pay attention to how it is healing so you don't run into infection problems!
Make sure to post a picture when you get it done!

i have two and never had a problem. i never told the artist - it actually didn't occur to me to mention it. my blood sugars are fairly well controlled, so i would think if you keep them under good control you shouldn't have problems with infections or anything.
like batts said, listen to your artist/shop NOT your friends. the artist will know best how to care for it. friends are well intentioned, but they usually give bad advice.... nothing against my friends :o)
If you want to get one for some type of medical alert purpose, still wear medical alert dogtag or bracelet or something. I wouldn’t want to take the chance it might not be seen or understood. If you’re outside and have en emergency and it’s 20 degrees or something. they’re not going to take you clothes off to find it. But, do what you thinks best.
definitely get a tramp stamp

make sure it's some weird line design with a flower in the middle or a sun.
(apparently if you have a tramp stamp you can't get that shot when you go into labour that takes the pain away...according to my work's custodian who saw the bat on my "tramp stamp" spot when i kneeled over to get something...gross)

ya that! i couldn't remember what it was called. but ya..he decided it was his business to tell me that and how no one tells young women these days about that. he claims they won't put the needle through the tattoo..but that seems a little stupid to me.
i was not aware of this either....
... guess it's completely natural childbirth for me.
If you decide to remove one, what's that like ? And is it really gone once removed or can you tell it was once there ?
i've heard it's damn near cost-prohibitive it's so expensive to have one removed. based on photos i've seen, it's pretty much gone, but it takes multiple laser treatments.
despite the epidural thing, i don't want to get rid of my tatts. that would also be assuming i have kids... which i really don't know if i want to or will have any. i thought long and hard about my tatts before i got them, and i like them. i'll still like them i'm 85 and my skin is all wrinkled and saggy. that's how you know you got a good tattoo :o)
theres also a lot of scarring i heard with removing them. a good reason why people should think about their tattoos before getting them. i was lucky with my foot tattoo..it was small enough and just a black outline, so i was able to have it covered with a koi fish(apparently that's the easiest way to cover up a tattoo due to the scales). you can kind of see the lines of where the bat was if you saw it before i covered it up still, but if you didn't know there was one under or hadn't seen it more than once..people have told me they'd never guess. obviously, that's also not an option for a lot of tattoos and as for the needle, it wouldn't make a difference anyways.

Quite a crystal ball you got there C. You know how you'll feel about the tattoo in 60 years. LOL
But really, so we're now taking medical advice from a janitor? Too much. Ask a doctor. A quick google search makes me think it's probably an urban legend. Sure sounds like one. http://tattoo.about.com/cs/tatfaq/f/epidurals.htm I wouldn't necessarily trust this either, but there seem to be a lot of hits inidcating it is an urban legend or just plain hoo-ey.
