Yes, Phebe, that makes sense. Thank you. How much insulin do you have left over sometimes?
Usually 20u to 30u, Iām still In honeymoon a little cause I was diagnosed in January so I dont use a lot of insulin yet.
Btw do u have an explanation for this sometimes I go weeks using like 30u or more a day and then i go weeks using only 10u or less a day itās very sporadic and Idk why it constantly changes.
I do know that a womanās menstrual cycle can have an affect on your blood sugars. 1-2 weeks before you start your cycle your blood sugars will creep up and woman usually eat more, even more fatty foods like cheese, avocados, beef, which all causes blood sugar spikes around 2-4 after eating. Progesterone is elevated during this time which inhibits the effectiveness of the insulin to work. A woman whoās pancreas works would just produce more insulin to compensate but since we are on a pump we would have to regulate it (which is hard to define specifically as to when this is occurring since our hormones fluctuate so much). I hope that helps.
Thanks that makes sense. Iām usually high right after my cycle but low during or right before it. Ik most others are high during but Iām usually low and then higher after which is kinda confusing to me
Do you use an app to track your cycle? This will help figure out youāre patterns.
Yeah I just got one recently
Your insulin requirements will be a little crazy the first year. Donāt get too caught up. The right amount of insulin is the amount that controls your blood sugar. =)
Be sure to use it with every sign and symptoms. Headaches, cravings, tired, etcā¦ I usually get a headache the day before I am going to start. And crave junk food and eat more the week before. Itās terrible!
Ok I will thanks. Same lol crave chocolate cake like crazy.
Thanks the amount of insulin I take every day has been totally different especially basal so Iām constantly changing it. Itās good to know that itās normal for the first year though. Thanksš
So you are newly diagnosed? I would love to chat and support you. I am new to this site and forum. Is there a way to chat privately?
Yeah January 18th 6 days before my 16th birthday. I think that you can private message if u push the name and it has a blue message box Iām pretty sure thats how to do it idk tho Iām not very high tech lol. I would love to chat.
Okay, I will try to figure it out later. I have to go now.
Thanks Doug for the report. I have been T1D for 68 years and 26 years on a Medtronic pump. I am at the end of my warranty of my 723 and am trying to decide whether to stay with Medtronic, go with DexCom or do the Medtronic pump and Dexcom sensor as I am now. You have helped my research.
Roger
I have been on a pump for over 25 years and have had problems with insulin after the 3rd day in the reservoir - so I change each three days and only put enough insulin to last three days based on my past usage. I have used the āthree day ruleā for a long time now and have only on limited occasions gone with a day longer - anyway, the CGM sensor does not really last longer than a week or so, thus giving me about 6 days with two sensor changes anyway. I know others have gone much longer with each CGM sensor used
.
Hey Brie,
Did you do this? Iāve had the 670g and the guardian cgm and itās sooooo bad. I swear the cgm only works 25% of the time., but when it works, I love it. Iāve used Dexcom 5 with the omnipod and decided to with to Medtronic cause of the integration but I loved the Dexcom. After learning that tandem integrates with Dexcom, Iām dying to switch but Iāve only had the 670g for a little over a year and a half so I doubt Iāll be able to get switch. Didnāt know about the ārental programā so just curious on some more info.
Thanks
Hi Amber,
YES! I made the switch and could not be happier I did. SOOO much better with T- Slim and Dexcom G6. I have not upgraded to the Control IQ yet but do use Basal IQ and really like it. I plan to upgrade soon. I LOVE not checking by BG on a meter and the Dexcom is super accurate. I also LOVE that the T-Slim is so much smaller than the 670g, its really a big difference. I heard that Tandem still have their $1000 ātrade inā program because I just got another friend to switch from 670g to Tandem and she loves it too. I was like a year into my Medtronic warranty so totally worth it to me but also understand not everyone has $1000 to drop on switching. Basically how it works is for $1000 you can ārentā the Tandem for the remainder of your other pumps warranty. And I was able to switch getting all my supplies covered, insurance doesnāt really care if you get your supplies from Medtronic, or dexcom or Tandem, so that wasnāt an issue.
Feel free to ask me ANY more questions. I really am so glad I moved forward I had made all these pros and cons lists debated, debated, debated. Once I switched I NEVER second guessed the decision.
Brie
Thanks to all here for all the input. Iāve been type1 for 53 years. I started pumping with Medtronic in 2008. My Endo is type 1 and has been using the
Tandem/Dexcom system. She is very happy with it, especially the software updates. I think Iām ready for a change
