Hey everyone!!
So as you all have probably seen (because I’ve been posting about it on a super annoying basis for the last couple months), I’m involved in a science research class at my school in which we have the whole year to do a project about a topic of our choice. I’ve chosen to do mine on T1D, for obvious reasons.
My first project idea–the relationship between blood glucose and salivary pH–was rejected because the “people in charge” didn’t allow blood testing. So instead, I’ve decided to investigate whether or not T1D could be triggered by a virus or other illness. I’ve created a survey (see below) and I’m hoping to get as much data as I can in order to provide an accurate analysis.
If you could please fill out this form, that would be great!! It’s super quick and it will help me immensely. In addition, if you know anyone else with T1, please ask them to fill it out too! The more data, the better.

Hi Abigael, I filled out the survey for our 6 year old daughter, she was diagnosed 3 weeks ago and I have been researching myself if there is a correlation between her asthma medication and the T1D. I’m sick to think this could have been from her use of the steroid inhaler Qvar.

I can understand your apprehension.
Although I am NOT a medical doctor I will render my assurance that asthma medications and heavy and continuously used steroids is probably not a cause of your daughter’s diabetes.
I will offer our granddaughter as an example for my oppinion; she was a 22 week preemie born without an immune system and only a partial lung. She has lived on steroids and asthma medications her entire life and though checked often does not show any indication of developing diabetes. She’s a fighter and at age 20 is now a pointe ballerina with a professional dance company. She still uses inhaler and nebulizer [I also had to learn to administer IV antibiotics for her] and at one time when she lived with us used Qvar - maybe she still does.
I wish you and your daughter well; visit here often with your cares, concerns and share with us your daughter’s progress and successes.
I told my son about it and he added something I had forgotten, in the months prior to his diagnosis he also had what we thought was a stomach flu where he recalls throwing up quite a few times while he was sick.
Hi @luisa, while throwing up, often severe “dry heaves” may not be a cause of T1D, that is one of the classic symptoms of diabetes and is often considered as one of the converging factors in accurate diagnosis.
From time to time your son may experience this symptom and that should be an indicator for you to check his keytons - it is not only an indicator of very high BG but also an indicator of infection without high BG.sw

Like the original poster, I am also currently conducting research regarding T1D, by mine is on the effects of type 1 diabetes on a child’s self-confidence at school. I believe that we sometimes forget that the complications of type 1 diabetes can transcend physical effects, and I think it is important to analyze how type 1 diabetes can effect a child’s mindset and behavior at school. I hope that this research can either help diabetic children better understand themselves or help parents better understand what their children may be facing.
I would really appreciate it if any diabetics in grades k-12 could take my survey linked below to help my research (with parent assistance and consent). If you have diabetic and non-diabetic children, please have each of them do the survey. If you would like to have a copy of the research results, please provide your email address at the end of the survey, as I would LOVE to share the findings of my research with you! My ultimate goal is to help diabetic children get the help that they may need. The safety of my participants is of utmost importance to me, and no information that could possibly reveal the identity of anyone will be disclosed in my research, which may ultimately be published in a student journal.

Hey, I would love to help out with your research. I am also a student conducting research on T1D. Im trying to study the effects of T1D on a child’s self-confidence. This is a really cool thing both you and bookwormnerd13 are doing. I’m definitely too old to help with your survery but just wanted to comment because I totally agree with your statement that the complications of t1d can go beyond just the physical. It’s so easy to forget but it’s such a huge part of the illness, for adults as well as children. Best of luck with your research. The more we understand the better for everyone, right?
