This is a poem I wrote about diabetes.
This Disease
I am tired right now.
Now I am bleeding.
Time to pull out my syringes.
I draw up some medicine.
Do you know why?
It is this disease.
This horrible, incurable disease.
Now I am shaking.
My heart is beating very fast.
I must have overdosed.
I am unresponsive.
I can’t move.
Now I am seizing.
My parents know why.
It is this disease.
This horrible, incurable disease.
They pull out the needle.
It is a bigger one this time.
It goes in my leg.
It hurts a lot.
Now I am vomiting.
And I know why.
It is this disease.
This horrible, incurable disease.
They have me on an IV.
No more shots!
My IV goes with me everywhere.
I don’t want to wear it.
But I have to.
Now you know why.
It is this disease.
This horrible, incurable disease.
I go to the mall with my friends.
I walk around with my IV.
I feel shaky again.
My heart is beating fast.
My friends say I am pale.
I see more blood.
I hate these tablets .
But I have to take them.
My friends know why.
It is this disease.
This horrible, incurable disease.
They say I am lucky
That I do not have Cancer or Leukemia.
But that makes me mad.
I don’t think I am lucky.
And they know why.
It is this disease.
This horrible incurable disease.
But I live my life.
I swim, I play, I party.
I get good grades.
I laugh, I cry.
I have fun.
It does not stop me.
It never will.
I am normal kid.
I deal with this disease.
Though it is a horrible, incurable disease.
It makes me stronger.
It has made me some friends.
It has made me smarter
And more sympathetic.
I live life to its fullest.
I appreciate my family and friends.
More than before this disease.
I do not let it define me.
I have Type 1 Diabetes.In the U.S., 36,000 new patients are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes each year.
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which the body's immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells (the beta cells) of the pancreas. Current treatment for type 1 diabetes consists of managing blood glucose levels through diet, exercise, and injections of insulin. Insulin injections attempt to replace the natural insulin produced by the beta cells in the pancreas. There currently is no other way to get insulin into your ody than by injection. This approach does not affect the underlying cause of the disease, which is the autoimmune attack on the beta cells. There is no cure for diabetes YET.
