How do you make injections less painful? We did real good for a month and a half, then all of a sudden she has started crying and saying they hurt. I know the Lantus stings a little but she cries with all of them. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
My daughter is four, using a pump and cgm. We bought Buzzy Bee. Amazon.com. It is a bit pricey but worth every penny. It provides coolness and vibration. Follow the directions. My daughter says she can’t feel her injections anymore. Best of luck.
I would be inclined to concur with Chelsea210. It may not HURT - but in her mind it is beginning to hurt! My wife can’t even look at a needle w/o freakiing out.
Luckily, when I was 10 and got T1 I thought taking shots was “cool” - probably a geek!
When I was a councelor at T1 camps many young kids would inject the bed and not their leg - we did it together and I would catch a lot of kids not wanting to take their insulin.
Thanks so much! I just ordered it and it should be delivered tomorrow. We can’t wait to try it.
Glad to hear. The other thing I love for my daughter is it gives her a task while dad or I inject. Makes her feel included at her young age. I hope it helps your daughter too!
Has anyone tried this? Amazon.com
And has anyone found a good alternative to Lantus (which I’m told has a higher pH, which I’ve tried to explain to my 8-year-old as “it’s spicy”)?
No, but at one point I was using Emla cream for a while … I think you can get it OTC now.
I am not sure exactly what you asking about regarding Lantus, but I believe that a higher PH is alkaline not acidic.
From their web page:
The pH is adjusted by addition of aqueous solutions of hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide. LANTUS has a pH of approximately 4. Mechanism of Action: The primary activity of insulin, including insulin glargine, is regulation of glucose metabolism.
PH of 4 is acidic.
LEVEMIR is a clear, colorless, aqueous, neutral sterile solution. Each milliliter of LEVEMIR contains 100 units (14.2 mg/mL) insulin detemir, 65.4 meg inc, 2.06 mg m-cresol, 16.0 mg glycerol, 1.80 mg phenol, 0.89 mg disodium phosphate dihydrate, 1.17 mg sodium chloride, and water for injection. Hydrochloric acid and/or sodium hydroxide may be added to adjust pH. LEVEMIR has a pH of approximately 7.4.
