Now what am I?

Well this diabetes thing sucks! Having been dx'ed at 52 was weird enough. Now I might not be type 1???? For about a month now I haven't needed ANY insulin. Makes no sense, I ate a ton of mashed potatoes, 4 slices of pizza, fried potatoes and fried chicken, no insulin and 1 hour later my meter says 140. If I eat a Big candy bar I can get to 160 in an hour. Then 2 hours later I am 120, 3 hours 95.

Being a Veteran from the 70's the VA Dr. put me in for Agent Orange and I did that C test thing to see what's up. Don't get me wrong I am diabetic! What type? Who the frick knows!!! I was dx'ed in ICU, DKA, bs 672 and a1c of 13.2. My last a1c was 5.7 or something like that and they were all happy saying that's in the normal range. LOL  Soooo I might not be Club 1.

And on top of that. They just told me the pain in my shoulder is because my socket is bone on bone. Great now I get to be a cyborg with replacement shoulder. Well I live in California,USA so when I get a new shoulder I think I will get a new tattoo. Yep a little cartoon Star Trek Borg, Call me Borg 420 ROFLMAO I will assimilate!!!

I am by no means a professional, but just my personal opinion it doesn't sound like you're a type 1. How can a type 1 NOT take insulin and still have good numbers? I miscalculated carbs the other day and spiked up to 500. Just imagine if I totally didn't take any insulin! So who knows if you are type 1, type 2, or something in the middle, LOL, but the good thing is that you haven't needed insulin! That's great!!!

i'm no health care professional but it sounds like you have type 1 but in a honeymoon phase where you are producing insulin but it is tapering off or actually have LADA or latent autoimmune diabetes in adults. I'd check with my doctor and get an antibody test to make sure

I was dx'ed about 3 years ago. I've had a lot of honeymoons and they only lasted about a 3-4 days. Here is another, If I take my base (Lantus 30 units) and drink a Lo-carb Monster 16 0z., I get lows like crazy!!!! Maybe I am Type 1b????? Not 1a

Wow, that's interesting Keith. Are you taking any Lantus? Or just avoiding short-acting?

I am not using any type of insulin. It's so weird. I got 4 bottles of Lantus and Novolg in the frig. I got a bottle of Novolg in my diabetes kit that I have to throw away because it's been open for about a month and It's barely been touched!!! Mind you I am still being very careful about eating and checking my bs. But I admit having to not shoot up LOL Is so nice. My tummy has no marks any more, no dot or bruises.

I wish I knew more about LADA -- do you think that's what's going on?

From what I understand LADA slowly have increasing bs and then insulin. I went from DKA at dx. to a little less than 3 years no insulin. Who know?????

I have also lost my extra weight, thanks to diabetes and eating better. I am now 6 feet tall, 55 and 195 lbs. I had been up to 250.

This is very interesting. In fact at my last Dr appointment I suggested to my CDE that maybe I don't have diabetes cause it seems that I am low more than I am high. She laughed and said no she wish that was the case. My a1c at diagnosis was 11.5 back in October and my last one in January was 7.5. I am now on an insulin pump but my day time basal is only .100 u. They say that I am still honeymooning... I guess only time will tell. I am anxious to hear what your doctor ends up saying, keep us posted and good luck!!!
