So having out of control sugar is bad for tatooing a diabetic? Would that make the healing process slower or make the tattoo more susceptible to infection?

exactly. longer healing time, more chance of infection, and if we have complications i'm sure it doesn't help those. i've only told two of the four tattoo artists i've been to that i have diabetes, it was the first two tattoos i got, and both times they just asked "it's under control though? okay, cool" and then we booked my appointment. the first tattoo i got she told us to eat a meal first, and bring a chocolate bar to keep our levels up(said this to me and my three non-diabetic friends) and just said it was very important that i do that especially cuz the stress can cause your blood sugar to drop.
they make you sign a release, but obviously if you're not healthy they aren't going to want to risk you coming back with an infected, badly healed tattoo. it is their rep on the line everytime they tattoo someone.
Thanks Batts, that makes sense. I love the fact that she instructed you to bring chocolate just in case. I mean that shows a truly informed artist, I respect that alot.
Hi Batts, I have always thought of stress causing blood sugars to go up-it seems to happen for ex. when my daughter has a big test for school. When she goes to concerts, she has to always watch for lows.Do you have many lows when you have stress ?
I too would think that under stress your BS would rise, not fall. But who knows.
This is a total guess on my part, but I'd think the question about diabetics and tattoos would be the fear of infection. May not be reasonable, but I think that's probably where it comes from.

mine usually spikes, but i've found my levels are normal to low with tattoos. maybe because you're understress but the vibrations of the needle is shaking you?? i usually feel low after a tattoo even if i'm not actually, so maybe it was just to keep me from feeling like i was low? it was mostly for us to have something comforting like chocolate and was optional, but she told me to make sure i brought one just to make sure i didn't drop, maybe she's had diabetics drop in the past or something..her dad is a doctor though, my friend used to go to him so maybe it's jus info her dad's given her about what to do for diabetics and such?
i totally got an infection for my first piece on my back so i can vouche for that! not sure if it was caused by the tattoo or not, but I got one of those fungus pimple rashs(that's apparently really common for diabetics..i had it a few times as a kid and i've had it at least twice since the tattoo) that starts off as one or two small pimples and end up as like 30. it was gross. started about two days after i got the tattoo but the clinic doc couldn't confirm if the tattoo had contributed to me getting it all of a sudden.
