Yeah I would! My mom said, "Really? You would do that?" and I said why not!

That's so exciting! I think I wanna do it for my 18th birthday if I can't talk my mom into it sooner! lol I'm gonna do a bunch of research and talk to my doctor and see what he says. I'll let you know when I find something out for sure! I told phoeb that we might do this together and she pretty much demanded that she be there when it happens! haha :) I'm so excited! Where do you want one at? And what do you want?
Lol! I am thinking I would want one on my foot...maybe...and I have yet to decide what exactly I want! :) How about you?
Yeah I want one on my foot too! You know the spot olivia has her tattoo on her foot? That's where I want mine. I want it to say "Diabetic" in a small scripty font! Does that make sense? I told my mom that since I was gonna have diabetes for the rest of my life, that I should be able to get a tattoo about it that will last just as long as my disease! haha :)
That's exactly the idea I had! I don't want anything big! :)
Me neither! OMG I am so stoked about this! lol Does your mom care at all that you want to get one?
Okay so I was thinking the other day how much this is gonna hurt. But then I was like come on we take shots and do finger pokes every day. How bad can it be! Right?! lol
Umm...I think my mom was surprised, but I don't think she minds. My dad was definitely fine with it. Not that I need their permission! I will have to talk to my doctor, though, and I think she would probably care more because she is a children's endo. lol : )

haha i went in with the same attitude..and BOY did i get proven wrong. it doesn't hurt hurt depending on where you get it(my foot hurt less than my ankle for the most part..my back hurt so much cuz of the spine/tail bone area and its size)..but it's defaintely NOTHING like poking your finger or giving yourself a shot.
(haha quoted the wrong person the first time around..)
haha Well I'm just gonna keep telling myself that it won't hurt that bad, because I don't wanna chicken out! lol Is your's on the top of your foot???
I'm getting one soon. I'm planning on having the medical symbol on my left wrist (which is where I currently wear my MedicAlert bracelet) and putting my diagnosis date on it.
yupper. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v212/littlebatts/6036485249_0_1.jpg not the best photo mind you(took it just after i got it done with my phone)..but you get the idea of where it's placed.
I talked to some paramedics this weekend about the subject. They had not really even thought about a tattoo med tag, but one, having a full sleeve, said he would take it into consideration if he were to find an unconscious pt. with no bystanders. The other paramedic said he probably wouldn't notice it. So I guess getting a tattoo as your med tag is only useful depending on the medic noticing it.
hi Shelby, I think the tatoo is a great idea. I'm a mom of a 16yr old girl with diabetes. I do agree that your wrist is the best place. EMT's look there first. If you have a cell phone (who doesn't?LOL) I heard that EMT's also look there for the contact: ICE (in case of emergency) and you can post your family's phone #, and whatever info too. I wish you all the best with your diabetes management. Keep up the good work! Bella10
I have 3 tattoos and have not had a problem with any of them. I have one on my hip, one on my left foot and one on my right foot. The only thing that I was ever told was to be careful of healing time and infection. I was told that getting them on your extremities is worse because of decreased circulation that diabetics tend to get/have so that could make healing time harder.
Other than that there is nothing wrong with getting a tattoo! I know I have seen a person on this site that talked about their diabetes tattoos, they had DIABETIC tattooed on both wrists. I want to say their name was A-D. I have not seen them around lately.
I personally would never get diabetic tattooed on my wrist, but thats just me, I don't really like putting my diabetes out there like that. I already get asked enough questions about my pump and all that. Also I am not a fan of arm tattoos because they don't go over so well in the professional world. I love tattoos though!
I want the diabetes awareness ribbon with the date I was diagnosed written inside the ribbon on my ankle.

that is actually a pretty cool idea of how to do it. my idea was to get the medical symbol(the cross with the snake) with diabetes written in there and my D.O.D. on my hip. but i like your idea much better! lol

Thanks, I actually have a medic alert bracelet already so my tattoo isn't really going to be for the paramedics to see or anything. I don't see why so many people try to hide the fact that they are diabetic. It's a part of who are and that's why I really want this tattoo.
Make sure that when you go to get your tattoo that you let your artist know that you are diabetic!!!!! That is the biggest mistake people make when they get tattoos and are diabetic. I have one tattoo which I got before I was diagnosed. But, if you pass out and they don't know they are not going to call 911 for you because it happens to a lot of people when they get tattooed.

[/quote]I'm not sure if you were referring to me with this, but I did say something along those lines so I'm guessing you were.
I do not hide the fact that I'm diabetic, I never have. Like you said it is part of who I am. The thing is, it is not WHO I am. I have made it a point to not let diabetes be who I am.
I do not mind if someone asks about my insulin pump, or anything else. I will gladly tell them, I just don't need another thing for people to ask about! I do not want the first thing that people see on me to be the fact that I have diabetes. I feel like if I had a tattoo of the word DIABETES on my wrist that would be all anyone ever saw. I would rather people see other things about me before they see the diabetes.
I want to be Jenny that has diabetes. Not Jenny the diabetic.
I do like the idea for your tattoo, I think it sounds cute. It would be so awesome if one day you could get the day you recieved the cure to be on there too!
