Well I was bored again and playing on the internet. Came across some info on Dawn phenomenon and the new thing, Somogyi effect. I think it's the fancy name for liver dump!!!! LOL It's when you have too much insulin and your body dumps glucose!!!
OK, so here it is. Dawn phenomenon or Somogyi effect. How can you tell the difference?
The Somogyi effect can occur any time you or your child has extra insulin in the body. To sort out whether an early morning high blood sugar level is caused by the dawn phenomenon or Somogyi effect, check blood sugar levels around 2 a.m. to 3 a.m. for several nights.
* If the blood sugar level is low at 2 a.m. to 3 a.m., suspect the Somogyi effect. * If the blood sugar level is normal or high at 2 a.m. to 3 a.m., it's likely the dawn phenomenon.
Just thought I would pass this on. After all I am easily entertained. (OMG I spell that last word right) LOL
The Somogyi effect is not something new. I've been seeing it in the literature for many years, and I can't figure out when I first saw it, but it was a long time ago, even for me at 77.
well thanks keith221 for the info it's going to be VERY helpful while I'm making all necessary adjustments to basal's and such.
but with the name sounds like it's some weather phenomenon instead of the cookie, since I don't know what the cookies that you guys are talking about are. being in canada our girl guides sell cookies but i haven't had any of them since i was a girl guide myself!!!! LOL

Hi Tom,
I meant new to me!! LOL I've only been type 1, 1 years and 10 months!! You have me beat by a long shot. Your advice is always welcome!!!! Thanks.
Haha. Somogyi is named after the guy who discovered it :o) We had to talk all about in my Medical Nutrition Therapy classes. College was the first I heard about it too.
Trish - no after breakfast spikes are probably not dawn phenomenon. That is probably the early morning insulin resistance a lot of diabetics (and even some non-diabetics) experience. Insulin is less effective in the morning (kind of like the body is still sleepy and doesn't quite know what to do with it).
First I have ever heard about Somogyi. And my vote is for cookies not sushi.
I also have the insulin resistance problem in the morning but I thought I was alone on that one. My dr wasn't even able to help with that one. I hate having to take more insulin.
