HIGH BLOOD SUGARS! Please help!

Hi everyone!! I am so so frustrated!!! I am 24 years old and I have been diabetic for 9 years. I constantly have trouble with my blood sugar being high-seriously in the 300s very often. I take very good care of myself and work out about 4 times per week. I also am a very healthy eater...I watch everything I eat. Even though I work out all the time and don't eat "bad" foods, my blood sugars are still through the roof.

My doctor put me on Symlin insulin a few months ago, and that helps a little bit. I lost weight and lost my appetite when I first started taking it, and my sugars were much better, but it seems like the effect of Symlin has worn off and I can't get my sugar under control now.

If anyone has any ideas, I would really really appreciate it! I feel like I take very good care of myself, and it's hard to understand why my blood sugars aren't reflecting that. Thanks!!

I know I have the same probelm. Iv had diabeties for 4 years n they just put me on the intense care management system and it stinks but now my bloods good. I think that ajusting my basals works the best!! Good luck though

Hi Sarah,

I have a few ideas/questions:

1.  At what point, in relation to food consumed, are you in the 300's  (Before eating, an hour after eating, three hours after eating, etc.)?  Is there a certain time of day, or is it genuinely all day, every day?

2.  When was the last time you did basal testing?  (If you're unfamiliar, as I was until a few years ago - this is where you obstain from eating or drinking anything besides water for 10 - 12 hours.  Then, you check every one to two hours, write it all down, and look at the pattern.  When your basal settings (or long-acting insulin) are "right", you should stay pretty much the same number for that whole period of time.)

3.  How often do you check your BG?  Do you do the test-two-hours-after-eating thing to see where you "land", so to speak?

4.  When do you take your fast-acting insulin in relation to eating?  (15 minutes before, when you start eating, or after you've eaten?)

Maybe you've gotten some of this resolved already, but if not...  let me know and I can tell you what, from my personal experience, has worked for me and might work for you.

Best of luck!

Kim

U guys r soooo lucky! I have horibble blood sugar levels and its becaus i just cant get into the habit of checkig everytime i eat :(

This results in my parents and doctors geting mad as hell at me!:(

Dose anyone have any practical advice???I would really appreciate it!

I feel your pain.  What's frustrating for me is when I wake up, have perfect fasting BGLs and as soon as I eat? POOF! Let the craziness begin.  So since I have the Dexcom, I've begun taking my bolus insulin 15-20 minutes before I  eat (I'm on Humalog) and just make sure it really gets going and then eat, which in my situation, prevents most of the crazies.  But I agree with previous posters; see at what point during the day you go high.  Also, you may want to look into getting a CGM, discuss it with your doctor.  I've had one for a few months now and while I still go crazy, I at least have a record of it and can see exactly where I went wonky.  These things rock.

I tried Symlin too, and it didn't really work for me.  Maybe I'll try it again.  I'm also going to try the basal test (haven't done one since I was diagnosed in '95).

I hope this helps...
