We all got the flu shot--not the H1N1 yet--I have to admit that I am a little nervous about the H1N1 shot-
me 2
My 15 year old (the one with diabetes) gave in to it on Monday afternoon (h1n1, not the vaccine) and went to doctor on Tuesday. I succumbed sometime overnight last night and wasn't planning on going to doctor until my chest started hurting so bad when I cough. Have an appointment for tomorrow morning. We all had seasonal flu vaccines two weeks ago.
they dont have it where i live yet,
but i went to the doctors today and i have influenza a, basically swine flu.
and if i get worse i have to be hospitalized.
theres a number of cases here, but i'm not worried about getting the swine flu though. it's no where NEAR the number of people that get sick with the regular flu and no one i know has had it. plus, there's that new concern that the flu shot makes you more likely to get the swine flu....
i think i just had the flu to be honest. my stomach hurt, but i didn't throw up though I felt like i needed to, i had a fever, dizziness and loss of appeitie for a day. pretty much how the "flu" goes for me...
i got my reg flu shot today and my swine flu shot on friday i just feel like im bein poked and proded !!!
Feel Better Soon--everyone who is sick....
I just really hope everyone does their own research before giving into the h1n1 'epidemic' scare. It is less virulent and less potent than the normal flu is. As for the vaccine: because it is a vaccine and carries the same risk/reward as any does, it may give you flu symptoms for 2 or so days because it is dead flu viruses being injected; but you will be immune to that specific strain of flu from now on. For those of you who have the choice (unfortunately I don't as I work in hospitals) weigh the options and do what YOU want, not what the gov't, news, or friends say.
I got the regular flu shot just because I always have. Don't plan on doing the h1n1 one because as Adam said, I think it's overhyped and people are making a lot out of nothing. Yes it's extremely contagious, but I know a good dozen or so people (several on rugby) who have had it and they were sick for about a week and then back to normal a week or two later. If I get it and keel over dead, you can tell me "told you so," but I don't think anything is going to happen.
Unless of course it mutates into a super potent deadly string and then we're all farked :)
My dad who does Homeland Security keeps asking me when I am going to get the H1N1 Vaccine. I told him I was not going to. He was a little irritated by that, what with me being at risk and all. However, I trust my body to keep me safe. It is more vigilance and proper care of self that will get people through this. Not take risks, wash hands, stuff like that.
Well, I have never gotten the flu shot, and I've never gotten the flu. I think the swine flu is completely overexaggerated. But my mom thinks it's a big deal, so she just had to call my endo and ask if I should get the vaccine, and my endo said yes. So it looks like I have to get it now. Grrr.
IF i get either flu, it's a mandatory 7 days off work... sounds like a vacay for me... j/k i know it's a big deal but i'm really not panicked...i'm kinda over the whole idea of it and there's sooooooo much back and forth about whether you should get either shot or not...i just wish someone would give it to me straight... yes or no and why... can someone PLEASE sort through all this crap and let me know?

i asked my endo at my appointment on thursday and he said he thinks it would be a good idea because it seems to be hitting young women in my age bracket more than any other group. apparently being diabetic wasn't the deciding factor for him to tell me to or not, he knows i never get the flu shot and the few times i've had the flu it wasn't a huge deal so he's never pushed flu vaccines on me. i probably won't end up with it though unless my mom forces me.

who?
I have heard a few of you saying it is not a big deal...it may not be any diferent than any other flu but it is VERY contaigious. One of the elementary schools in the district where I teach had over 40% (over 175) of its students and teachers out with it today. The school had to close. I am sure it will spread to the other schools in our district soon.
Angie -- your son w/ D got H1N1? Was it more severe for him? How were his sugars? Yuck! Hope you and he and your family feel better.
I'm planning on getting the vaccine for myself and my son. I work in healthcare w/ young children and have a child in daycare. I think people tend to be suspicious of vaccines, some for good reasons and some due to rumors in our society. But, I've always reacted well to the regular flu shot, and I certainly don't want to be sick for a week. But, I'm having trouble finding any place that has the vaccine. Two children on my caseload have already gotten the virus, but luckily, I've been flu-free so far (knock on wood).

Sarah, yes, my son had H1N1 Oct 3-10. Fortunately, during the feverish part, I took really good care of him, charted how much liquid I was getting into him (charting helped me make sure he was staying hydrated). His sugars were lousy, but never above 400, I don't think. But consistently lousy. And they still are now. He was just under 400 last night, but after two hours of dance classes, he was down to 124. Between the flu and then the week after when he had so much schoolwork that he didn't go to dance for another full week, he went two full weeks with no exercise---as opposed to 2-3 hours of dance every night. Our dance studio was decimated. With my son starting it, within the week probably 10 teens in our company were sick. Many classes were cancelled.
The illness itself did not seem more severe for him than for me, my husband, and my 13 year old son, all of whom got sick within the week. But I worried the most about keeping him hydrated and watching blood sugar. This flu was awful!! And truly a full seven days in bed for all of us. After the seven days, the teens have bounced back better than the two adults. The adults are dragging, Everybody is still coughing. I'm headed to the allergist this morning to see if I can get an inhaler or something to help my chest better because it hurts so much if I take a deep breath, yawn, cough, etc. But nobody feels really sick anymore.
Just FYI, there is no H1N1 vaccine in our area yet either.
Angie,
My D son had H1N1 at about the same time. We heard that one of the girls in his class at school was diagnosed with it so we called our doc right away and he called in Tamiflu for him. We waited to give it to him until he started having symptoms, but once the fever showed up we started him right away. I think we caught it pretty quick because it never progressed farther than the fever and a little cough. The rest of us ended up catching it as well but we all took Tamiflu except for our 10 month old. Poor little guy had to suffer through it, but we are all doing much better now. I hope you get to feeling better soon!
my 10 yro daughter has type 1,is IGA Deficiant and has thyroid disease...with all she has against her I feel I need to have her get the H1N1 Vaccine when it becomes available here, my son just had the regular Flu a week ago(was to get his flu shot this week) and my daughter got her regular flu shot 3weeks ago at the Endo dr. thank goodness...it was rough on my son but it would have been really bad for my daughter.
