FYI: retreat for young adults w/ D

This was posted on a listserve I'm on:

Hey everyone! I'm helping to coordinate a program ("DTreat") for young adults ages 18-25 with type 1 diabetes. There's one at Northeastern University in Boston, May 28-30 and another at UC Berkeley, June 4-6th. Last year's program was incredible - the group discussed everything from insurance issues to diabetes burnout....relationships to new technology/research. It's funded by Medtronic and only costs $25. Visit the FACEBOOK page, search DTreat or go to www.diabetescamps.org and click on the DTreat logo on the homepage. For those of you who remember Brit - she produced a video of last year's program. It's viewable at www.diabetescamps.org - just click on videos and then DTreat.

I'm going to the one in Boston! I went last year, and it was a blast. I highly recommend it!

I want to go so bad!  Why can't there be a midwest one?!

No kidding!  I would totally go if there was one near Nebraska!  That sounds awesome.

I agree! If there was a midwest one, I'd be there in a heartbeat :)

You all should contact the organizers and suggest a midwest one for next year then!

I did :) Here is the response I received:

"Courtney, Thanks so much for your comment.  It would be wonderful if we could have a Midwest DTreat!  Who knows, anything is possible!"

Haha. Who knows, anything is possible...

what's funny is that e-mail's subject was "dtreat" and I opened it expecting a low-carb recipe... hahah

Got another email today from someone else in charge of the program.

"Hi Courtney,

I hope there is a Midwest DTreat next year as well.  What we hope will happen is that our partner diabetes camps will organize a DTreat in their area.  If you know of a diabetes camp near you, you might want to contact them and ask that they consider doing one.  We will offer training and volunteers to assist in making it happen.

Sure you don’t want to get on a flight to Boston?  There’s still room!"

Anyone have any ideas? I've never been to a diabetes camp, nor do I know of any...

Hmm...I know Camp Sweeney in Texas has its own facilities that it operates, but other than that I don't know many diabetes camps that actually own the grounds they operate on.  Kinda weird that they're asking for a camp to organize it since the other two are on college campuses.

P.S. I would totally be signed up for this thing too if there was a midwest option.

Courtney,

You can find a national list of diabetes camps at www.diabetescamps.org , although when I tried to use the link just now, it didn't work.  Hmm.

there's one in boone, iowa!!

it's on a y-camp facility. it's called camp hertko hollow. i went there when i was 8 years old.

just thought i'd jump in here with some really random information. if i'm 26 in july will i be too old? what if i'm really immature for my age? :op

I went to Camp Floyd Rogers in NE when I was a teen - loved it!

Can we just make our own Midwest-y Young Adults Camp?
