Hey guys!
My name is Allie Hott and I am a junior at West Virginia University. I am a chairperson for the College Diabetes Network and have started a blog about the struggles of not only just being a diabetic but being a diabetic college student. Check out my website at https://letstalktypeone.wordpress.com/!! and also check out the college diabetes network at https://collegediabetesnetwork.org/!!
Thank you!
Allie
I just finished reading your blog post, In the beginning that used to happen to me all of the time. People saying oh you can’t have that, you can’t have this. It used to really bother me but,to the point of crying, now it’s just an opportunity to let them know about diabetes and everything I can do and have. Unfortunately, unless people are directly affected by diabetes they don’t really understand it at all. I don’t think they are ignorant just uninformed. But, in some cases saying mean things to people with diabetes on purpose is just plain wrong.
Thanks for checking it out! Do you have any feedback on it?
Thanks!
Allie
Hi, Allie! Congrats on starting your blog! My son was recently diagnosed with Type 1, so I’m really interested in following your blog and hearing more about your experience.
In case you are looking for ideas for posts to write, here are some things I would love to read. (And if you are not looking for ideas or don’t like these, just ignore this!)
- What advice would you give to students who are about to head off to college?
- What advice would you give parents of kids with diabetes? (If you feel comfortable sharing and your parents don’t mind, you could make a list of five things they did when you were in middle and/or high school that helped a lot and that other parents should or could do.)
- Is it important to have Type 1 friends on campus? Why or why not? How do you and your friends help each other?
All the best,
Jen
Hi Allie! So, what a coincidence! I just joined this site at the suggestion of social work, and this was probaly the third thing I clicked on. What I think is interesting is that next year, hopefully, I too will be a mountaineer and working towards becoming an RN to further diabetes education. I hope that we can get in touch and you can maybe give me some tips on transitioning to college life? I have a bunch of questions about dorm life, dealing with stress, food, disability benifits, etc. I would appreciate it if you replied or messaged me.
Thanks! - Johanna
