Hey y'all! I go to camp adam fisher in south carolina and i was just wondering if any1 knew of any other camps for diabetics....I love my camp but I think it would be fun to do more than one....don't y'all think that diabetic camps are just gr8? I used 2 feel left out when my friends talked about their 2 month camps and all but now I can add to the conversation!
There is Camp Nejeda in North Jersey. I never knew about its existence, however one of the kids on the retreat team I run talks about it all the time and has been going there since he was in fourth grade and is now a junior in High School.
Three of my kids go here (one counselor and two campers), it's a great camp.
I've been going to Bearskin Meadow Camp in California since 1997. It's one of the best places I've ever been, I can't say enough good things about it.
i go to camp jean nelson. its in alberta by bragg creek. shweet!
I go to Camp Clara Barton in North Oxford, MA. i love it there soooo much. i have so many friends there and it's one of my favorite places in the world :]
My son has been going to Camp Sweeney in Gainesville, Texas for 7 years and typically goes for more than one session. The friends he has made there are for life and it is neat to see the bond they have and all that the camp has taught him.
I may be the only person who does not think that diabetes camps are "gr8." My parents made me go to camp because they wanted to get rid of me for three weeks. I hated pretty much every minute of it. I was bullied constantly, and the camp counsellors never did anything about it. I had kids steal my stuff, sneak up on me in the bathroom and whack the door in on my head, refuse to be "buddies" with me (and you were not permitted to go anywhere in the camp without a "buddy", which kind of made things difficult), refuse to share tents with me on campouts, and order me out of my cabin in the middle of the night so that they could have "private" conversations, then get me in trouble with the counsellors because I didn't want to get up in the morning (due to being ordered out of my bed in the middle of the night.)
Most of the outdoor activities took place on the water, and I was not a good swimmer, which made things difficult for me. We were never allowed to be alone, for safety's sake, and when you are an introvert, you need time alone to recharge. And everything required us to pair up or be in teams, and I was the one who was picked last for teams and the one no one ever wanted to pair up with. It was pretty much the same as being at school, and I hated it.
When you're a diabetic kid who has Asperger's Syndrome, summer camp is not a good place for you, even if it is diabetes camp.
Camp Joslin for Boys, or Clarabarton for Girls. Charlton MA. Camp was my savior with diabtes care and emotional strenghth. I returned to Joslin for 10 years, and still reconnect time to time with those special diabetic friends.

Loryn is super excited to attend Camp Kno Koma in West Virginia this summer. Looking forward to meeting some friends she's "met" and be normal (like everyone else) for a week. It will be a first for Mom and Dad of course, but have heard nothing but GOOD from this camp. Loryn will surely benefit!!
Check the ADA's website and you can search for camps in your state :)
I went to camp last year and loved it! I go to EDI in Fredericktown Mo. and I plan on going back soon :)
Here's the link to the ADA search:

Hi Ella! If you go to diabetescamps.org it gives you all the camps nearest to you. I plan on going to one in North Carolina this coming summer. I'm really excited because I've never been before! :) Hope this helps!
