how do all of you deal with it! until now, the freakin nurse would not let me test in class (in case someone "bumped Me" YEAH RITE! ) now i can but she makes me show her my meter at lunch when i give insulin, and even show her the water bottles i drink when im high! The lady making all the rules is only there one day a week! it feels like their micromanaging everything and just make things more difficult! help me! wat do all of u guys do?
I`m in middle school too. I only found out in september so me, my mom and dad went to my school and had a meeting with the vice-principal( the principle was bussy with something) and my teacher. My dad just sat there but my mom told them that I would not be taking any shots at school for now and that I could test on my own. Then they asked about what I would need and they even talked about getting a mini fridge to put in the classroom for extra insulin in case of an emergency... Hope this wasnt annoying cause the meeting was realllllyyyyy boring.
So what you should do is have yuor mom or dad tell the school that you can do stufff on your own.then if they dont listen, I`m cluelees on what to do.
wow i don't even think my junior high even had a nurse, i think my doctor suggested to talk to the front office if they could keep a box of snacks there when i got low and didn't have any thing on me. the administration was good about knowing that i took shots and blood tests except one of my teachers was a ding bat about it. umm my last year there we got a new principle whom i became friends with because he too was diabetic type one. so yeah i had good people around.
You're probably going to, essentially, have to fight the school on this one. There's some forms you're supposed to fill out at the beginning of the school year, where your doctors and parents can state you are an INDEPENDENT DIABETIC. Quite a while ago when I was in school a sub-nurse made me tell her my blood sugar, but then when the nurse-nurse came back she let me be. If you're marked INDEPENDENT, they won't, or at least shouldn't, bother you about it.
honestly, your spose to do all your testing and stuff in the nurses office but she can't make you show her your machine and water and stuff and i just kept all my stuff in my locker so i didn't have to deal with retards like that.
A few years ago in school my doctor, family, and I filled out the paperwork to say I was an independent diabetic. I didn't go to the nurse after that anymore unless I specifically needed to see her (ie pump battery, low supplies, etc.)
damn u guys were lucky. the school nurse was a dumb butt i had to go to the nurse check myself tell her my numbers how many carbs i was having how much insulin i was taking . the distrect nurse tried to make me wear a fanny pack to pe but that didnt last long hahaha. but now im left alone (thank god 4 high school) they only bug me when i walk into the khicten and take some pink lemonade with out paying when my bg is low. but they shouldnt bug u that much (stupide school system)
I have been there, done that. Dealing with, working with, and fighting against the school is HARD. I had to as well go to a nurse who had no idea about me and my disease or what I needed. But sadly the schools are somewhat forced in this Zero Tolerance society to hold ALL medications in a place that is controled. It is because a few stupid people shared their stuff that the rest of us have to suffer. I was not even allowed to carrry the lancets to check my sugar on my person. So if my sugar was bottoming out I had to interrupt class and have a friend walk with me to the nurses room to check my sugar (so embarrassing!). But the school has to protect its self from stupid people so you just have to work around and with the system. Sometimes after you have proven yourself trustworthy you have more freedom. When I got to highschool and was old enough to have OFF CAMPUS LUNCH, the school was trying to make me go to the nurses office BEFORE I left campus and TAKE INSULIN and then allow me to drive to get food. STUPID!!! My parents wrote a note on a post-it saying if I was going to go off campus, I didn't have to see the nurse. Needless to say I ate off campus a bunch.
Having Diabetes, or anything that requires medication at school is tough, but the best advice is to be in consistent communication with the school, the nurse and your teachers and usually some kind of "deal" can be made that all can live with. One of the best things that happened for me is I got a pump so then I didn't have to worry about having enough insulin and stuff at school it was on my person.
Best of luck to you! I know it is tough. Once you get out of highschool, things get a lot better. College has been wonderful because I can carry everything I need and not have to worry about it!

I'm in middle school and my nurse doean't even care really( well she cares about me but like if i have a high blood sugar shes just like ok it could be worse all happy sounding) and my parents are really mad cuz my blood sugars are out of control. so yeah my problem is like the complete oppisite. but i don't the nurse at my school to be like that. But i would have your parents talk to her, and tell her to cool her roll. LOL!! jk just have them talk to her.
I was spoiled, I had a principal, Mr. Madison, who was type 2 and took good care of himself. He kept my insulin and syringes in his office and if I needed insulin I would stop by and chat with Mr. Madison while I took my shot.
I remember someone walking into the office while I had the needle in my arm and they staired at me. My face turned red but Mr. Madison laugh, he said "We're just shooting up cuz she is high, come on in." He was by far one of my favorite people in the world, I wish I could find him now and tell him that.
Anyway, you need to go in with your mom again and express to the vice principal that you are able to take care of your diabetes yourself. If you think that you are able to (because you seem like a smart girl) go talk to him yourself, ask if you are able to bring in a written statement from you, your family and your doctor that declares that you are a self-sufficient diabetic, that you will keep a record of you sugars at your desk, and promise to ask for help if your sugar goes low. Come up with a plan as to how and where it is best to check your sugar. I also suggest carrying your glucose meter on your belt or attached to your belt loop. If you want some ideas on how to do this I'll draw you a diagram.

my mom says almost the same thing. she will tell me lets go shoot you up when it is time to have insulin.
the nurse at my school (yes, im in middle school) has me check my BS in her office and do insulin, and even though im making descisions on my insulin dose (i have been for about a year) i have to call my mom, too!!!! AHHHH! it sucks!!! i hate my nurse she also keeps me in there for about 10 minutes to ""talk about what my blood sugars have been like.."" i hate her.

So when she keeps you there to talk about your sugars, what type of questions does she ask? Does she keeps record of your at school sugars?

thats the same way it was with me when i was in middle school. i am in high school now and its way more flexible!! but anyways i would just tell her that your not comfortable taking insulin in front of her and just throw away the water bottles she doesnt need to no how much you drink!! cuz insulin helps way more than water for high blood sugar!! you shuold probably just tell her what the problem is and maybe she will chill!! i dont no if thats much of a help but i hope it is!!! Im a diabetic at my middle school and im in 8th grade. My nurse is pretty cool about my diabetes and seems to understand what i have to do. Maybe its because im almost out of there she really doesnt care :S
