Best Low Food?

When my sugar is low I usually take a dab of honey and rub it on my cheeks! It really works!! Or if my sugar is 80~70 i will drink jucie

I've never heard of that! You seriously rub honey on your face?

I always carry around the small juicy juice juice boxes.  They have about 15 grams of carbohydrates and are easy to bring with you.  Of course, when I do get low, I usually use it as an excuse to eat whatever I want.

I really don't like those nasty glucose tablets.  Haven't eaten those in years.

The nighttime lows are the worst!!! I really want to eat everything in site!!!  I always thought this was just me.  I'm so glad someone else has this problem too.  I will eat a bowl of cereal, cookies, chips, whatever, and then I drink a gallon of juice.  After I'm feeling terrible and gross about everything I just put away, I'm mad because now I have to stay up and take care of my high bloodsugar.

Oh Carolyn, it's certainly more than just you and there is more than one "someone else" who has this problem!  I've frequently heard them referred to as "empty the fridge" lows.  I've certainly had them day and night, but I think it's more common at night b/c our senses are lowered in our sleepy state and it's just more scary.  I don't know about you, but my instinct is almost always to eat until I feel better and we all know that is usually WAY too much!

with my two little ones, we are avoiding fats and protein and doing straight sugar.  I was concerned about slowing down the absorption.  Once in range we follow up with a fatty/protein snack.  thoughts?

Lately, I have been on glucoshots they are soooo much better than glucose tablets. I can not even chew on a glucotablet they actually make me gag. I hate them. But the drink is awesome. I also like to have skittles. I love them but, once i have the skittle bug it is really difficult to kick. I start craving them like crazy.

I carry juice with me everywhere plus, glucoshots, and any fast acting carb i can stick in my bag.

I find it weird that a couple of people on here drink milk for lows. Mainly because I have never heard about the milk thing till recently my CDE just mentioned that to me last week at my appt. and then here a lot of you drink milk to treat. Go figure. I guess milk wasn't as weird as I thought!

Katie- your adherence to the guidelines of how to fix low sugars sounds great, very impressive!  Likely much better than my current addiction to candy corn!

And actually- lots of you sounds like you have healthy solutions for fixing lows. Maybe by reading all of this and thinking of all of you I'll work harder at treating my lows more appropriately instead of picking yummy but less successful and more complicated solutions.

when im in my dorm room = cream cheese frosting

at home = juice usually orange

in class = fruit punch or grape glucose tablets (only been diagnosed approx. 7 months so I haven't gotten sick of them yet.)

in the car = skittles (although this posed a problem the other day because they were frozen...)

I've tried regular soda, but it never works for me. My sugar stays low or gets even worse. very annoying!

the cream cheese frosting is my fav. I have to force myself not to eat too much. I love it because it seems to work faster than anything else and I seriously have a phobia to lows so when I am low I want it fixed FAST

Funny you mention never hearing of milk Gina b/c I never thought of it for lows either but have had numerous conversations w/dieticians about the fact that I don't/can't drink milk.  I actually have an aversion to dieticians b/c for years (awhile back) that seemed to be all the rage, "why aren't you drinking milk?" "diabetics can have milk" etc. etc. and I never would b/c milk basically did the same thing to me as orange just.  But- never translated it to using it for lows, guess I wasn't missing it.  Rather have apple juice any day and even that I have to force myself to have over treats like chocolate or candy corn! :)

I've gotten the glucoshots a few times when buying a 2 pack of glucose tab and was surprised buy how decent they were, haven't seen them for sale alone though.

I have almost always used the fun-size skittle packages, too. However, ironically enough, when I treat a low bg with milk I end up high a bit later, so its not a favorite of mine.

Milk isn't anything I've ever heard of for lows, and don't think I would've even thought it!

I usually keep some kind of candy or glucose tablets with me. At home I'll also have orange juice.

But, to share a story: One time, I had a really low reading in the middle of the night, but didn't have any candy, tabs, or OJ. Feeling a bit desperate, I went to the kitchen and grabbed the first thing I could -- hot chocolate mix. I ate it by the spoonful, but it turned to globs in my mouth. I opened the fridge and discovered a bottle of coke, so I drank some of that to wash it down, knowing that would help with the sugars.

Coke + hot chocolate mix = not a good combo.

Wish I'd seen the coke first.

i usually use glucose tabs but my friends end up eating them more than i do. =)

i cannot stand the taste of any regular soda any more so i never go for that.

i have learned that juice is the fastest. (i like apple)

like most D1's i use a low as an excuse to eat candy!

I try to stick with a juice box because I know exactly how many carbs are in it.

But I've had many juice boxes explode in the bottom of a bookbag, purse, duffel bag, etc...  Not too fun cleaning up that sticky mess.

I try to stay away from the Capri Sun juice "pouch" type.  I've found that when I'm low it's the hardest thing in the world to stab that stupid straw into the pouch.  Heck, it's gotta be hard for those non-diabetics out there who just like to drink juice.  Haha.

It depending how low I am...  If I'm really low and need a super quick acting item, I drink either orange juice or use glucose tablets.  If I'm just slightly low and can spare a bit of time, I'll indulge in chocolate chip or Oreo cookies!

BrianC: I'm glad to hear that the coke + hot chocolate sorked, but seriously... Ew, gross!!!  LOL

as I'm reading this, my sugar just dropped to 59 so I opened up an Ensure and added my protein powder to it.  I also have gastroparesis so need Ensure and the protein to keep my weight and evergy up.  I also like Little Debbies cakes or snicker bars.

That just sounds gross, coke and hot chocolate, sometime though we get so low, we just start grabbing.

I love peanut butter and graham cracker too.  When in the hospital that is what they give you too.

i remember when i first started treating my lows with milk, we ran out of juice and i remembered something that a neighbor of mine told me about her husband having reactions to milk because i think he's a type 2 or something. and i was like milk has carbs. so i started drinking milk. but that was at home. while im out i usually have some sort of candy or fruit snack in my purse or back pack. usually im at a place where they have a convienent store near by with in the building i go to school at now.

to treat a low, a 4oz. apple juice box. 15g (yeah, the kind with big bird/ clifford on them) :-) or during class 4 glucose tabs (the watermelon or green apple ones, I'm not too picky)

after my bg has come up past 70 (usually 15-20 min. after treating) I eat crackers and cheese, or I like Cinnamon Streusel MiniWheats w/peanut butter. The MiniWheats have 2g carbs each, so I eat 8. My diabetes educator taught me it is impt to eat carbs and protein beacause the protein stabilizes bg.
