Banner at the top^^^^

This is about the juvenation banner about ignorance and inconsideration with the cupcake.

I've been through that many times and that banner makes me feel frustrated that people don't take the time to become less ignorant about diabetes.  The lady in the pink shirt certainly has a nerve taking away that cupcake.  haha

Greg - you made me laugh at that one - for some reason, I just never paid attention to it.   BTW congrates on the 5.4 A1C !  With a result like that, the lady in the pink shirt should give you two cupcakes.

haha thanks doug, she better...that hand swatting ughhhh its the worst part hahaha

I noticed that too. Mentioned it in one of the other threads regarding people not being ignorant on what diabetes really is. It angers me just because I experienced that at my internship a couple of years ago...we were celebrating people with July birthdays and I went to grab a piece of cake and the woman (who was the manager of the group we worked with) snatched it right out of my hands and was like, "nuh uh, you can't have this" and walked away with my damn cake! Now I just avoid those kind of celebrations because I don't feel like fielding peoples' stupid questions of "are you allowed to have that," "that cake isn't sugar free."

Gonna get myself a Carvel ice cream cake for my 24th bday and eat it all by my lonesome :-)

damn straight, stupid pink lady

I haven't had anyone do that to me besides my mom.  She refused to bake me a cake for my birthday 2 months after I got diagnosed.  I was so sad!!  I threw a fit and she finally agreed.  My sugars were just fine after, so I got to say "I told you so.."

I can't believe she actually took the cake from you Pat!  I am surprised you didn't tackle her!  LOL just get your Carvel cake and enjoy.   And Heather, I remember my mom finding some bakery that made angel food cake with frosting that was supposed to be sugar free - I'm sure if I went back, it would be a no sugar added - either way it sucked!  I hated that cake and she got it for me for years!  I never said anything about it b/c I was trying to appreciate that she was looking out for me.

Yeah, the woman was a huge b****. I'm glad I don't work there anymore. I still have some ignorant people here, but at least none of them have tried to take my freakin food!

I like angel food cake...it tastes like spongey goodness :)

I am actually really lucky because I work with another Type 1.  And another guy's daughter is, and another's dad was, another's ex-wife is, and another's really good friend is.  In an office of about 20 that's pretty good!  So on cake days no one says anything to me:)  they all understand pretty well.

Greg: I think it's hilarious that you commented on that banner at the top because when I was on here earlier today I saw it and kept watching it and was getting more irritated with every swat from "pink lady".  Who does she think she is anyway?! Ha! I was going to post something, but looks like you beat me to it!  The other thing that is extremely frustrating in addition to people not understanding diabetes and thinking that they know better than you do about your diet (e.g. taking cake away)...is when people say "Oh I have a friend/relative who has diabetes REALLY BAD."  I try to correct them by saying "Uncontrolled diabetes" but some people just don't get it.  Does anyone else feel that way?

Nicki: I havent experienced that recently but I remember a while ago when I was first explaining to people I have diabetes they would say that someone they know has it bad and can't have any sugar....frustrating how people still don't know that we can eat what we damn well please :) :( mixed emotions there

Heather: It's a really small world because my neighbor across the street has type 1 and is on a pump and the next door neighbor who moved away had type 1 too...is there something in the water??? AHH

OMG you guys are too funny! That banner does make me irritated as well. I want to take that cupcake and smash it in her face LOL Maybe i will lick it first though HHHHHaaa

Some people are just rude.  I hate when someone goes out of their way to tell you can't have something.  A few months ago i was in Chicago on business.  There was one guy there that when we'd go out to lunch, he'd say "you can't have dessert".  Or if there were doughnuts "I guess you can't have any of these."  Like he was rubbing it in or something.

But really, it doesn't bother to me that people don't know about diabetes.  Why should they?  If we didn't have it, how much would we know about it?  How much did you know about it 6 months before you were diagnosed?  How much do you know about other chronic illnesses such as epilipsy or Crohn's disease or autism or asthma or narcolepsy or cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy or biploar disorder?  Be honest, do you think Schizophrenia has to do with multiple personalities?

Most people are trying to help, but some people are just jerks.

DD: its true not very many people know about every disease, but I'd like to think that the person with the disease knows whats best for them and if they shouldn't have something then they should say it not have the option taken away from them before they have a say.  Thats what I think is the most annoying thing about cupcake lady at the top.

Perhaps you've seen the other Ignorance banner? It's a side banner with a guy giving himself a shot and another guy saying "ewww" haha that one doesn't bother me at all I just laugh at their ignorance just don't stand in the way of my cupcakes thats all I'm saying.

To toss an addendum onto DD's and Greg's statements...You both make good points...especially the one about "if we weren't diabetics ourselves, would we know anything about it." My only statement with regards to that is, if we're ignorant on a subject, we won't (or most of us won't) give advice or directions like we know what it is.

I feel that sometimes people just want to feel "smart"...sorta like if they stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night. So they just blurt out something they read somewhere or heard through the grapevine...no matter how inaccurate or off the wall. Maybe they want to feel smart, maybe they just want to hear themselves talk, but I really wish they would query about it with a politely phrased, "With diabetes, can you eat stuff like that?" To which we'd respond, "as long as we have insulin we can eat what we want (although we shouldn't all the time)." Rather than, "you can't have that, you're a diabetic!" while at the same time snatching away whatever sweet goodness you were about to chow down on.

Maybe we should create a diabetic colony somewhere...if we pooled our money we could probably buy Iceland...I heard they were bankrupt :)

iceland sounds good...but i think we should shop around a bit before we decide haha

I think it's a pretty good location. It's an island and therefore isolated, good area of land, you get the Northern Lights...probably a couple breweries. There are enough people with diabetes that we'd be able to fill the niches in our society with whatever we'd need (doctors, chefs, etc.). We might be onto something

don't forget they have hot springs there, they're suppose to be therapeutic and increase blood flow to your limbs.  i think iceland is a good idea, who else wants in?  Depending on how many people we get, more the better, the share price goes down haha

At least people are stopping you from eating sugar....When I was first diagnosed at 19 (20 years ago)... my very best friend slapped a french frie out of my hand and told me I wasn't supposed to eat it. She thought I couldn't eat salt!!!

HAHA...we laugh about it now

What banner are you all talking about?

I agree.  Those are the "jerks" and "rude people" I was referring to in my post.  I would never try to suggest to someone with asthma or herpes how to manage their disease.  But the world is full of nosy, bossy, know-it-all people.  Expecting this to change by some education program is a pipe dream IMHO.

I have.  On this one I don't understand why the diabetic person should expect anything else.  Giving shots to oneself grosses out 99% of the people out there.  I understand this, because while I give myself 4+ shots a day, I still hate getting shots at the doctor's office.  I get nervous and just hate it.  We are a small minority with peculiar medical needs.  Most people have a phobia of needles or finger sticks or infusions.  Personally I think it would be kindof rude of a diabetic to do this stuff in public.  We have to do it, but we don't have to do it in public.  I don't see this as being ashamed of being a diabetic, but just being considerate of others.

It would be nice if people knew more and understood us better, but it's just not going to happen.  Deal with it.  IMHO if you expect people to be knowledgeable and understanding of diabetes and don't take the time and energy to learn about other chronic illnesses and their treatments, you're a selfish hypocrite.
