Ok still having issues with this. The principle of the school went as far as he could in trying to help me. To make things much less complicated I found a article from the ADA
It is the school’s legal responsibility to provide appropriate training
to school staff on diabetes-related tasks and in the treatment of
diabetes emergencies. This training should be provided by health care
professionals with expertise in diabetes unless the student’s health
care provider determines that the parent/guardian is able to provide
the school personnel with sufficient oral and written information to
allow the school to have a safe and appropriate environment for the
child. If appropriate, members of the health care team should provide
instruction and materials to the parent/guardian to facilitate the
education of school staff. Educational materials from the American
Diabetes Association and other sources targeted to school personnel
and/or parents are avail-able.
So I am going to ask our DNE to write a little note stating I am capable of training the staff on how to administer the glucagon and teach them myself :) I will have it stated in her health care plan that the schools nurse refused to do it herself.
How frustrating this must be! School administration can be so difficult sometimes. In 8th grade I was told to stay back form a field trip because the school nurse was unable to go with, and that I could not carry an insulin pen around school with me. Hopefully you will be successful with this.. after all, glucagon is fairly easy to mix and administer. Good luck!
It sucks. The school nurse has 7 schools she covers so there really is no relationship with her at all. If she was there full time it wouldnt be a issue. I need to get my hands on a bunch of expired kits before friday. Well maybe friday the principle was going to try and get the formal health plan meeting set up for then. I could fight the nurse more but if I can do it this way I am all for it. I know there are many many people at the school willing to learn how to use the glucagon jic. One being a teacher at the school of a t-1 kid.
Well it's good you have some support! Among other things, I'd bring up the lack of staff in the meeting- it seems ridiculous that there is only one nurse for 7 schools! We had 2 nurses at my high school alone!
