Why am I always so tired?

2-3 hours a day wow, I think just thinking about that makes me tired haha, I need to get off my insulin dependent butt more often.

"insulin dependent butt" has so many layers! I love it!

there are lots of reasons that can attribute to being sleepy! most of them have been touched on.

most common ones: depression, boredom, insomnia, too much sleep, lack of activity, improper diet, low iron, dehydration... the list goes on and on.

activity, even though you're burning more calories, also boosts your metabolism which gives you more energy throughout the day as well as more restful sleep at night. drink LOTS of water because even a weensy bit of dehydration can cause confusion and sleepiness. you can try breaking up your meals and snacks more so you're eating constantly throughout the day. every time you eat, your metabolism gets boosted to digest the food. also, high fat foods make you feel sleepy because they are very energy dense. if you aren't giving your body an opportunity to expend the energy, it just builds up (gets stored). low iron is more common in women, however it's very possible for men to get it too. when your iron is low, you aren't carrying enough oxygen in your blood making you feel sleepy and sometimes out of breath during normal activities. not enough sleep or too much sleep with also play obvious roles in how you feel throughout the day. depression makes a lot of people feel listless, unhappy, and tired--as though there is nothing to look forward to--resulting in sleepiness (because of the feeling there isn't anything else to do). and being bored, makes a lot of people feel sleepy because it seems as though there isn't anything to do to pass the time.

i briefly touched on a whole bunch of areas. hope you figure something out! i understand how frustrating it can be.

If insomnia is part of the problem it's generally fairly simple to break the cycle here.  My doctor prescribed a 14 day course of low dose Ambien.  You don't want to get hooked on this medication but for a period of a week or two it's very useful in breaking your sleep pattern.  You just take one a half hour or so before you want to go to sleep, and bingo... no more depression.  You get a good nights sleep with no hangover the next morning.  After a week or two you'll be doing it on your own without the medication.  Meditation and self-hypnosis work to greater or lesser degrees for many people.  Messing around in bed is also still an effective treatment for insomnia as well as getting in a little last minute exercise to end the day :)

maybe you have chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS)?

Fatigue can be a symptom of celiac disease.  I was diagnosed with celiac in Februrary and, after about a month on the gluten-free diet, I started feeling so much stronger - more energy, less tired, more motivation, happier outlook on life!  I believe I probably had celiac for at least two years before being diagnosed and I was extremely tired for much of that time.  Celiac and type 1 diabetes are closely linked so you may want to ask your doctor about being tested.

I have been tested for it but its a negative.  I am just tired...maybe im just complaining because life is slow right now?

Greg,

I think you may have answered your own question....

...maybe im just complaining because life is slow right now?

I would say it's definitely a part of the problem.

Like I had said before, I've been fighting the same problem.
And, if it makes you feel any better, just think of the millions
of Americans who are recently unemployed or underemployed.
People who were active all their lives find themselves having
to invent things to do in order to avoid getting depressed
and sleeping all day.  Millions of Americans are going through
this nightmare right now.

stilledlife - ok, I'm curious about the dry skin on the hands.....I'm ALWAYS tired and have a really itchy patch of skin on my right hand....the only thing that helps with the itching is running really really hot water over it.....does something to calm the nerves....just curious where you were going with you question.....can you cure me!!?? :>
