Who is The Rock to be our Ambassador?
Is the Rock even diabetic?
As far as I know he is not.

The Diabetes Aware website covers both type 1 and type 2 which is why you don't see any kind of disambiguation on the poster.  As for quotes, it would be nice if they mentioned they were creating awareness for both diseases but a simple trip to the website cleared that one up for me.

This definitely irritates me too... I agree that Diabetes awareness is important, but Type 1 and Type 2 are so different (perhaps it's only we Type 1s who feel that way) that they need different names, or more distinct names... I think that would ease my irritation quite a bit! :)

Here is the press release:

PRINCETON, N.J. and LOS ANGELES, Aug. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- dwayne johnson joins with Novo Nordisk, a world-leader in diabetes care, and the Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF), a leading charitable organization of the entertainment industry, to encourage families to get active together as a means to help prevent diabetes. As an ambassador for the Diabetes Aware campaign, johnson will appear in a public service announcement (PSA) to educate families about the prevalence of diabetes and the importance of an active, healthy lifestyle.

The PSA is part of the ongoing Diabetes Aware educational campaign sponsored by Novo Nordisk and the EIF. The campaign aims to reach the 24 million Americans who are living with diabetes, as well as the estimated 6.2 million Americans who are unaware that they have the disease, to underline the importance of detection, monitoring and proper management of diabetes.

A lifelong athlete and known for starring in family-friendly movies, johnson recognizes the value of a healthy lifestyle in helping to prevent and manage diabetes for both children and adults. "I'm honored to serve as an ambassador to the Diabetes Aware campaign, and I want to encourage families to be active and eat right," said johnson. "Small steps can go a long way in managing diabetes, its complications, and raising healthy, active children."

With the launch of this new PSA, johnson becomes the latest celebrity ambassador to join the Diabetes Aware program since its inception in 2004. Past ambassadors include Halle Berry, Cuba Gooding, Jr., Dustin Hoffman, Kevin Kline and Jon Lovitz among others.

"We are delighted to continue our partnership with the Entertainment Industry Foundation and believe dwayne johnson is a great ambassador for the Diabetes Aware program based on his dedication to reaching families, both on-sc

I don't believe in criticizing  anyone or any organization for trying to do the right things.  But, I can't believe that there is anyone living in the US, especially those who watch TV regularly, who hasn't heard that it's better, not only in terms of diabetes management but in terms of all disease prevention and treatment, to lead an active, healthy lifestyle.  It's kind of like telling people that it's better to wake up and get out of bed in the morning than not to.

I have no problem with The Rock being the ambassador as long as he knows what's cookin' (LOLOL sorry had to do it.) By cookin' I mean as long as he knows what he is talking about, and can truly create awareness about diabetes, whether it be type 1 diabetes or type 2 I have no problem with it. And yes, I think he is so fine LOL

Now, that we are on the subject

Why can't they use people that live with diabetes everyday in these PSA's? I mean yea celebs are great and all but, It always sounds fake. The only celebrity I can honestly feel that I have a complete connection with anytime she speaks is probably Nicole Johnson, she was Miss America 99'. Anytime you talk to her on a personal level or hear her speak you can totally relate to her and what she is going through. She makes the disease real. You immediately feel the connection. I know Jonas Brother fans may hate me right now but, I never feel a connection when I see Nick Jonas either. I want to feel his story in my bones when he talks about diabetes. I never feel that way at all. It is like he is reading from a cue card. And to be honest he was a total flop at the Children's Congress this year. Sorry Nick.

I want to hear from people like me. People  that have to do everything themselves, and don't have personal chefs and trainers helping them along the way.

Ok, that is my ramble for the day. Sorry.

PS: Oh yea I forgot, Mary Tyler Moore she is good too. I like her.

Here's my brief position on it: if he wants to be invovled, go at it, Mr. Rock! I certainley admire his will to be ambassador for a chronic illness he is not forced to associate with. I also, however, would prefer our representative me someone with empathy, not sympathy. It would be nice for them to come from the same situation, etc. But alas, we got the Rock - fine by me as long as he does well.

It is easier to use a celebrity rather than Joe Yale because of their connection to the general populous.  Jay Cutler was recently diagnosed with type 1 so he would be good but outside of fans of the NFL not too many people know who he is.  The Rock is recognizable to millions and millions of people.  Putting a recognizable face on an otherwise unfamiliar disease bridges the gap and creates a more positive awareness for it.

Joe Yale is a great idea! I'd forgotten about him... Clearly he was exercising before being dx'ed with T1! lol

Gina, the press release you posted sounded more T2ish to me. Did other people think that too?

Sarah,

Everything sounds type 2 that the media puts out don't you think? We get no respect! ~ Rodney Dangerfield LOL

T2 is a much larger problem because so many people are effected by it. It has the potential to be prevented, so there is a big push to educate everyone on what to do to lower risk factors. T1 is not preventable, so while there is education available, no matter what you do you could end up with it.

Exercise and activity is one of the largest components of possibly preventing T2, so I understand why they would choose someone like The Rock to be a spokesperson... he quite obviously works out :o)

Maybe I'm just hard to offend. I don't get irritated about misconceptions. Sure, I get some truly ridiculous questions and statements, but that's life. If I can, I take the opportunity to teach someone. If they choose not to listen or still don't understand, it's not my problem--THEY'RE the dumbass... must be tough to go through life like that :o)

I'm curious...what happened at the Children's Congress? And how old is Nick Jonas?

Madame H. B. makes me want to...to............thank....her in person for her......inept........thought processes.

I believe that Madame Berry needs a steel toed kick in the derrier. I would administer it myself were it not for inconvenient laws and a sense of slight guilt that would perhaps follow. What a nincompoop.

Does anyone feel compelled to meditate on the state of the media as evidenced by such shoddy reporting and "journalism?" And thank you for the warning about the Rock. I am not going to investigate. I get really angry when I see things like that. Here in SC, the opinions abound. I wish I were rail thin and could tell people to shut the..........heck.........up by saying, "Look at me, oaf!"

I am not obese, but I'm not thin...just big hipped and broad shouldered. I get so sick of these reports. It is therapeutic to call numbers and send emails...although I don't write very nice emails...too much venom. I don't make a good ambassador of anything when I am irate. I'm working on it.

oh, and on another note, I agree with you, Gina, about having someone who goes alone w/o a personal trainer and chef...man that'd be nice, now that I think of it...the second part. Imagine having someone there like that...wow. But then again...I don't know if I would want their hassles. I'm sure that celebrities with brain have hassles. And I like Berry's songs...but not her. She's a dim one, no? Why do dim people, when they open their mouths, always seem to have a microphone capturing every word and a camera trained on their faces? Why...

I like "The Rock" but I like Halle Berry better to represent us. I hope to be like her one day and represent for the diabetics (if there hasn't been a cure yet). :)

ha ha ha. brittany wants to grow up to be a crackpot.

just kidding, brittany :o)

haha! If I were famous I think I would be crazy. I probably would be a crackpot! lol.
