Nah, he's just discouraging me from wanting to admit I carb count. Ok, now I'm staying out of this, for real!
1:10 carbs.
Wow...um, this was an interesting thread to read..
Up until 2 1/2 years ago, I was on insulin shots. I was on a "sliding scale" as my Endo referred to it. I sordof had this idea in my head with the portions I was eating and the amount of carbohydrates. However, like HappyVegan, if my blood glucose was in a certain range, I only took a certain amount of insulin. If it was in a "higher" range, then I would take a little more insulin to cover the blookd glucose level to the food. If I were to eat a plate of, for example, green beans, 1 piece of chicken, steamed carrots, and a slice of bread, then I would have taken about 1/2 a unit of my novolog or 1 unit...the long lasting insulin, lantus, kept everything else at bay. Its really kinda hard to live your life carb counting, and I didn't ever really look at it like it was carb counting, but "guestimating." I knew that meats (protein) had zero carbs, then zero insulin. Same with veges (most of them) never enough to make a spike in my blood glucose.
Fast forward to now and my basal rate setting on my pump for the entire day is : 4.74 units. But when I bolus, I "carb count" now due to the fact that it makes my life a little easier, but thats my preference. When there are no carb labels...I return to my sliding scale. My carb to insulin is 1 unit per every 20 carbs.
To HappyVegan, the Ping has an option ( I have the Animas Ping ) that says on the menu "ezCarb" or "ezBG." The "ezBG" is for you! :)
The "ezCarb" is for me! :) But, when in doubt the "ezBG" is for me too! Thats the cool thing about our mechanical pancreas, it gives us options!
Sincerely,
Alayna D. Strickland
Alayna-
Your basal rate is 4.74 units per hour? Or 4.74 units total? If it's per hour, that seems like a lot of basal insulin!
As I mentioned, its 4.74 total for the entire day.
my insulin to carb ratio is 1 unit for every 5 carbs. they will prob change it tomorrow though because i have a one week follow up appointment(due to me starting the pump)
I'm being completely honest when I say that mines 1:2....no joke!
I'm 1 to 10 alll the timee :]
I just went from 1:10 to 1:7, which is sending me low in the afternoons but I just boost that with like 10 grams of carbs. It's going pretty good so far
I've always carb counted, and my ratio is 1:8.
What's carb-counting? ... just kidding
;)
So people know, I spent the last 15 minutes reading this entire thread and by the time I got to the end I wanted to stick a pencil in my eye.
Oh, mine's 1:20 to 1:30
William's numbers were just adjusted...he's at 1:20 for breakfast, 1:12 for lunch, snack and supper, and 1:30 for bedtime, with 10u of Lantus for 24 hours.
Mo
1:7 for breakfast, 1:12 from 10:00 - 11:30am, 1:10 for lunch, 1:12 from 2:00 - 6:00pm, then 1:13 for the rest of the day.
There is a book that I learned my car ratio from. I'd be happy to scan in the page that helps you figure it Wolf. It's worth it. Don't have to worry so much about what you put in your mouth with carb counting. :)
LOL!!! I agree!

you crack me up!
mine is 1:12 in the morning and then 1:14 the rest of the day.
Mine varies depending on a number of factors like: Time of day, Exercise, Alcohol consumption etc...
Mine is 1:9 It was trial and error for me. I had 1:15 at first but was not working so I decided to adjust and 1:9 all day is working just fine.
Breakfast 1:8
Lunch 1:6
Dinner 1:9
which gets soooo confusing sometimes because there have been times when i got breakfast and lunch mixed up and then went super low before lunch!!!!
1:10
correction is 1u for every 30 over 120mg/dl
1:10 makes the math easy!
