What is the most annoying people that don't have diabetes say to you?

"She cant eat that, she's a diabetic." Seriously, you know what I can eat? I think I can decide what I can and can't eat people..And on another note, why do people always have to say "she's a diabetic."? If I want them to know, obviously I'll tell them myself! Lol

Also, when I tell someone that I'm a diabetic and they respond by saying: Oooh, my Uncle (or whoever) had diabetes, but they died and got his leg cut off..Really? Thanks for compairing me to your dead Uncle who lost his limbs! Hah

My paternal grandmother thought for years that I got diabetes by "eating too much sugar."  However, a few years ago I sent her a great link explaining type 1 diabetes, and she replied saying she understands better now.

I worked a few days as a temp a while back at a factory packaging fruit rollups. When I mentioned to someone I was working with I had type 1 diabetes, the response was "Bet you wish you hadn't eaten so many of these!!!" (he had been stuffing his face with fruit rollups all afternoon). I did some explaining, he failed to absorb any of it and then went on about how his grandma had diabetes. His well-informed wrap up to the conversation was "Well you'll live... just not very long". Some people are just not very bright or open to learning new things. Luckily we don't often have to depend on those people for anything.

My mother in law told my husband not to marry me because my diabetes would be a burden to him...that wasn't annoying but just hurtful!

thats so ignorant its ridicules, because sometimes people don't know, but understand after explanation, but thats just a bad match of ignorance & stubbornness.

Oh, and when I first got diagnosed, I got un-invited from birthday parties because parents thought I would give it to their kids!

I am very insulin sensitive so I need small amounts but often and EVERYONE says  "You are like a baby, it must not be that bad!"  For those who don't think I can eat sugar - I recently freaked everyone out at a party when I started eating a piece of chocolate cake.  A woman actually had the nerve to grab my plate away!   Seriously, true story - so I grabbed another piece with my hand and shoved it in my mouth.  You could hear a pin drop as they say.  Guess I was acting like a baby!

to quote Stephanie Tanner : "How Rude!"

I hate when people ask me if I need something.  Some juice.  Do you need something.  Huh, do you?  Do you feel okay?  Huh?  Do you?

My Chinese teacher in my university said that China did not have diabetics. I said that did not seem possible.  She assured me they did not.  I mentioned she may not have heard of such things because sickness is not genereally mentioned/talked about in Asia and our media is much more open to reporting on just about anything.  Ironically, the following year she came to me and told me her mother was just diagnosed as diabetic.

Another fun one:  There was the school bully who slammed my locker door into my head.  We got into a big old fight and were torn apart by a teacher.  Later, for some reason, he asked me if diabetes can make me go crazy mad.  I told him yeah, especially if my sugar is high.  He kind of stopped bothering me after that.

I hate it when a phy. ed teacher says that if you don't exercise you will get diabetes.  Then everyone assumes that is what happened to me.

I hate it when I'll be eating something and someone says, "Aren't you diabetic? Are you supposed to be eating that?" or "I'm sorry."

And then the part when I am in a restaurant and I 1. take my blood sugar, which gets me tons of questionable faces and 2) when I go to get my insulin and syringe out of my purse to go and give myself the insulin. People give me looks like I am getting ready to shoot up some heroin or something.

I have epilepsy as well and the thing I ALWAYS get with that is, "so if you have a seizure should I put something in your mouth so you don't swallow your tongue?" Seriously?! Does someone always hold your tongue when you are sleeping or laying down so you don't swallow it???

Some people are just morons.

I once had someone tell me I was lucky my daughter had type 1.  I could not beleve it!

Hey Richard-

I find that the number of years you have had diabetes to be encouraging.  I have only managed for 43 years.  I love your post and agree, people say such stupid stuff!

One thing is "OMG is it contagious?! *scoots away*".... No.

My friend was once introducing me to some other friends at a block party and said "This is A! Shes a diabetic =D" and the others were like "Why do you always say that?" and my friend said "So if she falls over you know what happened =D" I just think it was so cute how she didn't really care that she was discussing my fainting lol

I have a few. I go to school with about 2,000 other kids and 7 have diabetes. So not many know what it is or what its like and I'm the only one in my grade. So I'll often get:

"Can you eat that isn't it high in sugar?"

"How can you do that without freaking out?"

and the ever so annoying "You can't eat this ahahahah" (when somethings high in sugar)

when people have no clue that there is a difference between type 1 and two diabetes and assume you got it from eating unhealthy. OH MY GODDDD. and the media doesnt help with that at all either.
