Uhh what is my meter smoking?

I checked my blood sugar before dinner tonight and it gives me a reading of 314...i didnt feel 314 so i checked again.  this time on the other hand.  It came back with "Lo".  now im thinking maybe i have something on my hands. so i wash them in the bathroom and then check yet again. this time im right in the middle 180.

I use the BD meter that came with my minimed pump a year and a half ago, ive changed the battery once...just recently in april (kinda recent)

Has anyone else had an issue with this meter and what advice do you have? im not sure i trust my meter any more.

low battaries maybe? replace them just in case. or maybe bad test strips.

Hi Greg,

The same meter came with my minimed pump, I had so many irregular readings with it (even after changing batteries), that I just went with a different brand of meter. Do you have a back up you could use for now?

i havent really left the test strips out anywhere they shouldn't be (hot sun or freezer).  im not getting a low battery reading, but ill check the battery with the volt meter thing.

Hey Greg - Yes, I had that problem with the same meter - a few times.  I never figured out what it was, they just sent me a new one.  I tried batteries and everything they asked me to do when I called but nothing worked.  Soon after the issues though they sent me the new One Touch that links with the meter (I believe they stopped supporting the BD if I'm not mistaken), anyway, I haven't had any issues with the One Touch.  At the minimed store I think it's like 80 or 90 bucks but give them a call and say the BG isn't working - it might just be under warranty still and see if they offer to replace it with the One Touch.  Good luck.

im not a huge fan of the one touch meter, i was on the one touch ultra smart for the longest time and i loved it but when i switched over to the BD it has such a smaller blood sample size. :/ sacrifices i guess.

Yeah, I hear ya.  I've never really had an isuse with sample size so the one touch was okay for me, plus I liked the comments I could add after the test.  We all like what we like - sorry the meter isn't working - that's just frustrating.  Did you call the help line for any suggestions?

no not yet, ill be doing that soon for sure.

maybe your meter has been smoking insulin...it's this crazy new street drug-even little kids and grandma's are using it!  some parents are even injecting it into their infants!  or addicting their kids while still inside the mommy's tummy!!  crazy diabetics!  maybe you left your insulin lying around and that's what your meter smoked!

Most of the meter companies will gladly replace the meter.  They make all of their money on the test strips.  Just call them and explain the situation or ask your doctor for the name of a rep. to the meter company.  I get them free at different conventions and have about 6 extra in the house.  So before you spend your money put in a little effort and it should be replaced for  free.

Do ask around before replacing...I spent money on several backup meters only for my endo to later tell me he would have given me several for free.

One Touch made a minimed link meter as well. Its pretty much an Ultra2, but with no backlight. Works great for me.

i dont trust the contour link that i have for my pump. compared to onetouch, the blood sample size is way smaller but sometimes it says my blood sugar is up to 2mmol higher or lower than the onetouch.
