Type 1 Diabetes Doesn't Mean You Can't Have Frightful Fun During the Halloween Season

The Food Network has some great ideas for kids and for those that are kids at heart to celebrate the Halloween season.  Take a look at the link and find out how to make Mini Cake Eyeballs - a fun low carb treat.  Make sure you use mini cupcake baking pans.  The mini size of the cakes keeps the carbs down.  Does anyone have a low carb frosting that still looks nice but is lower in carbs ?

haha too you long enough to notice and reply =P

ha. i got side tracked. i found a dog in my back yard and was seriously tempted to keep it except i knew it belonged to my elderly neighbors. so i returned said puppy, then they kidnapped me and made me look at photos of all their famous friends and multiple houses (i get the impression they have money).

well worse things could've happened to you. maybe you should ask them to buy you a house the next time you save the dog lol

A house, a dog, a husband and a white picket fence!  Oh, and I forgot, I functioning pancreas too! LOL

I'm with Batts on this one. ;)

I am SOOO sorry to vent, and I know you all mean well, but ... OMG!! If one more person sends me some "helpful" article about how diabetics CAN enjoy Halloween if they only have some crazy treats no one else wants, I will scream. Okay, sorry, vent is all done.

Lots of candy isn't healthy for anyone, so we don't keep all the candy my son collects on Halloween around the house. But, if I want some candy, I take insulin. No different than other days... I am also not psychologically scarred from my childhood with T1 -- my Mom let me and my sisters keep some candy, but not all of it. I am more scarred by well-meaning internet articles about how I should feel very different and stressed every Oct 31.

Hope I didn't offend anyone. This touched a nerve. (:

I agree with everyone about eating candy on Halloween.  When I was younger and on MDI with a set number of carbs I had to eat at various points during the day, I still ate candy.  Sure, I would have to be careful about how much I ate and when I ate it, and I chose to give most of it away for a toy instead, but Halloween for me was pretty much the same as for someone with a functioning pancreas.  Plus, with all the running around on Halloween night, I usually had to eat some candy anyway ;)

I know what you mean Sarah. I was "invited" to a group doctors appointment a week ago (it came as a scheduled appointment, so I took a 1/2 day off work and went), and they only thing they talked about was Halloween! I'm not an idiot. I have enough common sense to deal with Halloween treats. But honestly, we've always tossed probably 90% of the candy. Sarah picks out a few chocolate pieces and eats about 1 small piece every day or so for a few days, then forgets about it, then it ends up in the trash (I don't pass it on because honestly, candy isn't good for anyone...).

Anyway, as much as I love her Endo group, it sort of annoyed me that I wasted so much time on something that wasn't helpful. If they'd called and told me what the meeting was about, I wouldn't have attended.

So Mom's,

What are you doing for Halloween? Do you trade a prize for nearly all the candy?  I'm all for them not eating it all- we usually pick out the chocolate and then send the rest to my work breakroom!!! Like you said, Michelle, my kids eat it for a few days and then forget about it. Out of sight out of mind!!!

Thanks Batts, I busted out laughing!!! What a sight that paints in my head!

Well, it's been so long since I've had any candy that my body would probably protest any holiday gorging. Instead, here's how I'll have fun: since switching to an insulin pump, I have a bunch of unused syringes that I could give out to particularly bratty trick-or-treaters!

Totally kidding of course! But seriously, halloween's been all about the costume and not about the candy for a couple years now - and still just as much fun.
