Hi everyone,

I am currently 6 wks gest and am having some problems with lows. I have had some highs but not too many. My problem is i check my BS every 2-3 hrs during the day and i am having BS in the 50's and 60's. I feel like im constantly treating low BS. I feel like all i do is eat ;( I keep juice and fruit snacks in my purse but what else do you guys use to treat your lows????  Something a little bit healther??? Any reccomendations??/

Hi Brittany. I too had many problems with low blood sugar during the first trimester. I would encourage you to get in touch with your endocrinologist or whoever manages your diabetes for you and see if they can help as well as get you in to see a nutritionist. That being said this is what helped me survive. I really like glucose tablets to treat lows, especially when I'm away from home. They're convenient and it's a measured dose of glucose, so it's easier to not over correct. They can be a bit pricey though, like $7 for a box of 50, which if you're going low as much as I was, won't last too long! :p Always make sure that you're following up with a protein snack after your lows. The sugar, like juice, will bring you up quickly, but your body also burns through it quickly, which is why you need something that will take longer for you to break down as a back up. The best things I can recommend would be half a peanut butter sandwich and a glass of milk, a piece of cheese, or yogurt.  I don't know if you're on an insulin pump, but I found that since my blood sugars went horribly low when I tried to sleep, I would often set a temporary basel rate of 0.00 for a few hours. That way I could get some sleep without plummeting into the 40s and I would set an alarm at the end of that time so I'd wake up to check. It's better then suspending the pump entirely just in case I didn't wake up, I wouldn't go without insulin for too long! You know yourself best, so you may just have to set it to a lower basal then nothing at all. Make sure if you try that to check very often especially at first to make sure you're not going too high. Good luck and trust me it does get better!
