The random phrases that People say about Diabetes that do not make sense

when i was in 7th grade i was in my pre-algbra class and i could tell my sugar was going low so i asked my teacher if i could go to the nurses office to check my blood sugar and she said "yes u can but im pretty sure its going to be red".

hey! I was reading your post and noticed that you have two children with Type 1. I do as well. We were told when my first child was diagnosed that it was next to impossible for siblings to have diabetes. They are both doing well.... anyways, i just saw that and wanted to extend a hand to you.

i used to have neighbors that had kids with diabetes. out of 5 kids all born to the mom and dad 4 had type one diabetes. neither of the parents had the disease, but i think that at least one or both had family that had it.

My mother-in-law always offers me candy or dessert and then pulls her hand back quickly before I even answer and says,"Oh that's right, you can't have this!"  She's known me for almost 10 years and I've replied everytime that "I can have it but I don't want it."  This blows her mind because she's such a sweet freak.

And whenever people see my pump they ask if I have to wear it all the time and that it must suck.  I always say it's the most awesome invention ever!

I really hate it when television shows blow diabetes all out of proportion.  That's wear people get all their wacky ideas about it.

I've only been a diabetic for approx. 3 years, but I have received some insane comments about my diabetes. I can only imagine what those of you have heard who have been diabetics far long than I have.

So the absolute worse statement I've received to date: "You have type 1 diabetes? ... Well, you gave it to yourself."

Ya, tell me about it. Why don't you educate yourself before giving me your two cents. That one left me speechless and irate.

That's interesting to me for sure because I am a professional racing driver.  I was diagnosed during the middle of my race season and had to miss the end of the year until I could get it all under control.  I have since gotten back in the car and done well.  I have gotten some really neat emails supporting me and from people who want to race but thought with diabetes they couldn't.  My typical response is "I can do anything I want, eat anything I want, be anything I want- I am just going to do it with diabetes"

The best random phrase I have had was when I was on the podium and I pulled out my Dexcom CGM to check my number and another team's engineer looks over and says "oh is that a phone? Checking email eh?"  And my repsonse was no, I have diabetes and it's a CGM blah blah blah- to which he replies "Oh I read that you had diabetes, but I thought it was all fixed now- cured right?"  D'Oh! Funny- I haven't seen the doctor who wanted to prescribe the cure for me!  I am enjoying reading all the stories and sahred experiences on here- it has to shorten the learning curve for me (I was only diagnosed 16 months ago- so I count myself as a 'diabetes baby'!)

We were also told how rare it is the have siblings with type 1.  We have no family members with it.  It just came out of the blue....but so did the first diagnosis.

One time someone came up to me and said "aren't you diabetes" and i was like yep i am the thing all of the diabetes!! I just thought it was funny stupid!!

Thanks for posting this, I have a 6 yr old son who loves cars and will be inspired by your determination to do whatever you want. We always tell him he can do anything, then we show him people like you and he gets it.

Hahahahaha! When are we making these shirts???

lol!! your funny!!

we totally should make shirts though!!!

You hit it on the nail. When my daughter was diagnosed every body said poor little girl, they said you guys make this look easy you must love to give her shots.  A duh I hate giving her shots...

The two most annoying ones that i have heard are:

Can't you not eat any sugar?

People come on, everything has sugar in it!!

Do you bleed alot from the injections and finger sticks?

This question is just awkward

I hate the "oh my grandma has diabetes" comments as well as the "so you can't have sugar" and the 'diabetic' foods are always great, especially when they still have carbs in them.

I always love when people hear I have diabetes and on a pump. They ask how I have to wear it, when I explain how you put a set it people always say "Can't you put the insulin in without a needle?" One time I got so ticked I said "well, I could try to push it through my skin but I think that the bottle would shatter before I got any in me"

That and when people tell me of all the people they knew that died because they were diabetic, like their friend's cousin's mother's roomates former high school basketball coach who died 10 years ago in a plane crash. Yeah, that is just the same thing, really it is.

MY WORST!!

.. I'm opening a chocolate bar.

"You shouldn't be eating that!"

.. I'm having a needle.

"So, does it like not hurt anymore?"

.. I'm laying on the floor, low.

"Uh.. Do you need something?"

i love it "uh do you need something?" i get that sometimes, when i stumble into a place where i know there is food and start opening the candy before i even turn to go pay for it.

I hate it when people to list all the things that can go wrong.I want to say please stop!! But it does take the wind out of me,and I am left speechless....I have been working on alot and this is one I am trying to get a voice on.

Yea, you guys have to remember... these peoples grandmas and grandpas might ACTUALLY have Type 1 Diabetes, too.

My "favorite" (grr) is when I tell people I'm diabetic and they start talking real loud and slow like I can't understand them all of a sudden.

They'd be like:

"OH... I... AM... SO... SORRY... TO... HEAR... THAT!"

I love that people posted to this again, because just today, I was so annoyed. I overheard a Mom of a 4 year old at the school where I work saying, "No more sugar. You'll get diabetes and have to take a shot everyday and it will really hurt." I must have given her a strange look because she said, "Oh, you know, I try to scare the girls out of eating sugar by telling them they'll get diabetes. " I was so irritated, that I answered, "I did get diabetes when I was four, but it's not from eating sugar. It's T1, so it can just show up at anytime. I have to take shots ALL the time" while looking at her daughter. Then she said, "Oh, well you must manage it well because I didn't know you had it." So, admitting you have T1 means it's not managed well??? Bleh!

<My daughter was diagnosed at 8, my all time favorite response I received from one person was  "really, she is not fat, how did she get diabetes?"    It was at that moment it became crystal clear to me that we had a LOT of educating to do in America!!  Up until then I thought I was only fighting staying off the sugar free band wagon.>

Good luck with that, Teacuppin...most people are ready, willing, even proud, of their ignorance. I think that this is because these people know, somehow, that there are a few people who simply enjoy being ignorant. That's why they say the same thing over and over. It has no variation. It's the mental form of not blinking.
