Teens managing D in school

At first i was quite nervous about trying to manage diabetes at school but everyone was so helpful and now I just test my blood/inject whenever I need to wherever it may be (in class, at the luch room etc.) Nobody makes a fuss about it) :D

Now that I'm in HS, I just got a 504 plan and all that stuff for tests, etc.  In MS my nurses were idiots, and now they're okay, but I changed my plans after school started so that I don't have to go there before lunch every day.  You would think that all schools could make an exception for testing in the classroom, because with diabetes you kind of have to check anytime anywhere....then again, my school (public) has 10 kids with type 1 so it's not so hard for us....

Do you know if most insurence company's cover the CGM. I think my daughter is a canadiate for it but I'm worried about it being covered. She is on Childrens Special Health Services.

I'm on the pump so it would be different for me than someone on shots. I hate nurses... so I kind of refused to go there to do sugar checks. The only check I do during school is lunch, anyways, and I just do that in the cafeteria. As long as you have doctor and/or parental consent, the nurses can't do much to stop you.  It's a lot easier to just check your sugar without the nurses breathing down your neck.. and it makes you a little less of a freaky disease kid too.

Beemer was diagnosed at four, so he went into Kindergarden with diabetes.  The principal and a rep from the Regional Health Authority helped us develop a plan to react to highs and lows.  The teachers that he deals with have also taken part in Diabetes Awareness seminars so they are aware of everything.

He tests in his class and calls home if he's high.  Otherwise the teachers (and Beemer) know how corrections work (we gave them a chart for lows + carbs needed to correct).  We're also allowed to come by at lunch if he's high and inject right in the class.

It's awesome because he's in Sunday school with 4 or 5 kids from his class and we're friends with their parents, so the other kids are right in there and asking questions.  I've spoken at the school a couple times now (with the Student Council and at a walk-a-thon for JD).  When I go to the class to give him a needle, I'm usually bombarded with kids "Mr. Brandon's Dad! Brandon is 11 point 4!" hehehe.

We got an extra sharps container from the pharmacy and had it put in the classroom.  We have an emergency snack in the music room, the nurse's room (our school doesn't have a nurse, though), the gym, the front office and, of course, in the classroom.  Beemer also keeps a juicebox in his backpack.

Pam,

Hi! My name is Audrey and I was just reading your post on managing diabetes in school. I have had diabetes since the eighth grade and have gone to a small school ever since then. I never had much trouble with teachers being bothered by my testing in class, but we had to get a few approved in order to give me the glucagon shot in case I ever passed out. I have a lot of kidney issues because of my diabetes and I had a little bit of trouble with a teacher not letting me go to the restroom my freshman year, and he wouldn't let me test in class, either. I fought the school and got a 504 and we also had a section put into our school handbook about diabetes. :)

For me, managing has been relatively easy (minus the one teacher), so I say, go for it! :)
Good luck and best wishes!
Let me know how everything goes!
Blessings!

i used to do both. like i would test in class and if my numbers were crazy i would go to the office because i cant really function if my numbers arent good. well thats how it was for the first 2 years of high school until i overheard my nurse saying iwas irrisponible for having my number so high... i was like 540 or something and it was because my basals needed to be changed really badly. now i just call my mom if im unusually high and she will take me home for the day or until im better.

well i can take my blood sugar in the office or in the classroom. i just have to put up with everyone staring at me. =[ oh well. i hate going into the nurses office because the secritaries in the office get annoyed when i come in too much. but i try not to go in that much. i know that if i put a juice in my bag ill drink it same with glucose tabs.

i don't even remember how i did in high school i think i just had really good control so i hardly ever had to check during class, but if i ever did i usually checked because at the beginning of the year i would tell the teachers what the deal was and i remember one teacher in my ceramics class told me i could test in her class, but if i felt i needed to get food then to take the hall pass and go get food don't even bother to tell her and just go get food. i remember a couple of times where i had to do that. i remember i had to leave the class to get food a couple of times because my blood sugar was so low.

Hi i know i'm a little late on this one but i thought i'd add in some info. I was diagnosed march 5 2009. I was originally not on the 504 plan and it was going to be a problem for my SAT's in the beginning of May. In order to have breaks and have food College Board required that I be on a 504 plan. You might want to think about that before SAT's and ACT's come into the picture.
