I know many of you have experienced this, but it TOTALLY drives me BONKERS. When I go out and order a DIET soda and they give me regular, particularly fountain drinks.
For instance, I went out this past weekend for a couple cocktails for my best friends birthday. I specifically asked for a mixed drink with DIET SODA. I am a bartender, so I know the "wonder bar" (soda dispenser at bar) by heart. There are specific buttons on the bar and I know what is what. So I watched her make the cocktail and I saw her push the regular cola button. I asked her if it was diet, and she responded, "Uh....(hesitation)....yeah..?". I said that I was type I diabetic and this was important to be sure that it was diet. Then the lady says, "I'm pretty sure it is, just take a few sips and if you think it is regular, I will make you a new one". HUH?!??!!? Seriously? I told her then that I was a bartender and I knew the buttons by heart, that I totally SAW HER push the cola button, and made her make he a new drink. Some people...I know that most people are not educated on T1, but seriously?
Ok, I am done venting now!! Thanks for listening!!
Drives me nuts - I used to carry the older color-change strips because they reacted to the sugar in...well ANYTHING - so - i could get a verification and proof. I understand there is no chance most workers will get it but still INFURIATING -anyhow wanted to chime in with a quick +1...
Pat--I TOTALLY agree, people make mistakes. I can distinguish diet from regular in cans, but various things can contribute to making bar or fountain pop hard to determine if it is diet or regluar. I honestly can't tell with fountain pop. CO2 levels and syrup concentration are all different. I wasn't mad at her, just kind of irritated. If it was me, I would have just made a different drink either way when someone's health is involved. I would not have died, but I would have felt pretty crappy if my BS would have skyrocketed. Something that could so easily be prevented by just switching the drink, I guess I would have just done it. But you are definately right. I just need to look out for myself =) I love Simpsons, BTW! Very fitting =D
Oddly enough - when I'm out drinking - can't always tell by taste - it is why i retreated to scotch rocks or scotch soda - hard to make an error there :) And while it won't kill you - the mistakes both ways - being low - ordering a regular and getting diet - VERY frustrating - and also - ordering diet and not knowing you needed to bolus for it - more than a little maddening - good on you for never being fooled, though - wish I had your pallet in that regard :)

Oh, if I am drinking it's usually beer. But I'm not picky enough to ask for a "gin & diet tonic." Plus, I'm not sure how many bars carry diet tonic. If my sister (also a T1) and I are drinking them, then we buy diet tonic, but I haven't had any reactions from gin and regular tonics. Other than feelin good
I can't always tell. Sometimes I make my boyfriend try my drink but he can't always tell either. If it's at mcdicks or someplace I got take-out, I just toss the drink and find something else when I get home, but at a bar or sitting down for food somewhere..if they aren't sure, all the waiters/resses I've come across will re-make the drink for you. I have never gotten the "oh just try it and if it's wrong I'll re-make it" before..I don't think that would fly in my books.
I have to agree with you that this is completely irritating. I agree with Pat that people make mistakes, so I would probably react the same way you did. However, I feel like when you ask and point out you are diabetic, the bartender should have just made you a new drink. What is the point in answering yes? Just say, I am not sure, and make a new drink. Gosh.
I find it hard for me to tell the difference sometimes cuz I'm used to drinking diet now. So if I want to know for sure I get a non-diet pop drinking non-diabetic friend to taste to tell if it's diet or regular. Diet coke and pepsi taste different from the regular so it's easy for my friend's to tell.
I can tell the difference. The way I do it is to suck hard on the straw and get it go quickly though my mouth if that make sense. If it is diet I can certainly taste the difference between the artificial sweetener taste and that nasty thicker sugary taste. With just a small sip I'm not sure I could tell.

OK.. I must not have had enough coffee this morning, or am still really tired, because it took me a few minutes to "get" this one. Thanks Pat for the chuckle!!
