i love your enthusiasm, vered. congrats on all the exciting news.
Hey Vered! Great news! I'm saying "YAY" along with you! As much as I'm sure you enjoyed pigging out for the last few weeks, and especially your birthday cake, I'm pretty sure that this is your best birthday present this year!
Happy Birthday!
I have the Pink Ping too <3! I began "pumping" 2 1/2 years ago with the Cozmo Deltec. I really liked it but switched to the Animas Ping and I have had no problems, and love it more than the Cozmo Deltec. Its much thinner and not so bulky. The insulin delivery is much quicker. It also gives you more options than any other pump I had researched. The thing I love the most about it, is the fact I can set my basal rates at different times of the day to automatically change. This is helpful because I know that I will be working out at around 5:30 pm everyday, so I set my basal rate lower one hour prior, eat my pre workout snack and have avoided the low blood sugar since being on this pump. Its awesome!
Also, I work with Doctors and nurses, you name it. One Dr. stopped me and asked what I had on my hip. I said it was new insulin pump. He asked, "Why Pink?" I said "If I am gonna wear a mechanical internal organ on my hip, I think its best I get to choose the color." :)
I am officially pumping!! I started at 1pm with my lunch time bolus. so far I have been pretty low all day even though they set my rates really low so that I would run a little higher...I guess it didn't work. I am going to call my cde soon and ask if I should lower it even more. I am only on 0.2 u/hr with a c:i of 25:1..so its really low! it is pretty weird in my mind when I think about it, but I can't really feel it and I don't really notice the pump.
Congratulations Vered!
.2u/hour is less than 5 units per day. How much Lantus were you taking? What c:i ratio were you using when you were bolusing with injections? Did you do a lot of exercise today? When did you take your last injection of Lantus? I wonder if any could have been left in your system? You'll work it all out, I'm sure.
Paul
Thanks! I know it is very little insulin, I actually lowered it to 0.150 u/hr per instructions from my doctor. I was taking 7 at the beginning of summer, but with the hot weather I was having a lot of lows so I lowered it to 6..and was still having quite a lot of lows but it might of been from my c:i being off. with injections I had a ratio of 1:20 for bf and 1:15 for the rest of the day, and now they lowered it from 1:25 to 1:30. I did not exercise at all today, except I walked a dog but thats part of my daily activity of being a pet sitter (and it wasn't a long walk at all..only 10 mins.) I took 3 units of lantus last night at 11pm, so I was running a temp basal today from 1pm-6pm at -70%, so there might have been a little bit left. hopefully these new numbers will keep me more stable so I'm not real low overnight!
When you think about your great A1c's, which have been getting better and better over time, as well as your tiny doses of insulin, which have also been getting smaller and smaller over time, it looks like you might be the first person to ever make a complete recovery from Type 1 diabetes :) You must have some function still left in your pancreas Beta cells. Fantastic! (What's your secret?)
Did your Endo ask you to test a few times during the night? It would probably be a good idea. I've heard that Humalog is 50% more powerful unit for unit than Humulin Regular, but I don't know if Humalog and Lantus are the same strength unit-for-unit. I believe they are, so that shouldn't be a factor.
hahaha my pancreas was just on vacation for 8 months...but he's back now. yea I am definately still honeymooning cause it has only been 9 months since I was diagnosed. I don't have any secrets though..so I guess my body is doing something that I don't know about. I was told to check around 3 am and I have to wake up at the same time every day (earlyish) so I am getting up at 9. my sugar was 82 before bed so I had a 20-25g carb snack, was 125 at 3 am, and I woke up at 93. so it is much better after lowering my basal to 0.150. and I know my a1c was so low because I was having a lot of lows. my doctor said he doesn't want my a1c to be 5.4% if it means I am having lows at least once a day, so hopefully having the pump and moe precise dosing will eliminate a majority of those lows. it is a main reason why I wanted to go on the pump.
It sounds like you had a pretty good night. Did you bolus for your 20-25g bedtime snack? All your numbers are good but I'm just wondering what accounts for the rise to 125 at 3 am and especially the fall to 93 when you woke up. If the 125 had been closer to 90 or 100 you might have woken up low.
I have heard that by maintaining good control during the "honeymoon" period you can actually sustain the life of your Beta cells, perhaps even indefinitely. It's great that you may be proving that theory to be correct. It has also been said that the less insulin you require, the less insulin-resistant you will become over time.
I did not bolus at all for that snack, because I ate to to ensure that I didn't go too low overnight and bolusing for it would cancel that out. so that is probably why I went up to 125 and I am pretty sure that in the early morning hours my blood drops kind of low but then my liver releases glucose to take care of it since I am sleeping. so I think my blood probably dropped to like the 70's but then sugar was released and thats why I woke up at 93. I have never been higher than 120 in the morning, so I have like the opposite dawn phenomeon thing. usually when I wake up I feel tingly like I was just having a low but when I check my blood its usually 90-120, which is why I think I go low but then my body takes care of it.
That would be really awesome if it was able to save some of my beta cells indefinately!! being on less insulin overall seems like its a better way to go as far as less insulin resistance and less weight gain or chance of weigh gain. I really didn't gain any weight except for putting back on the 7lbs I lost, but that is expected.
