I've been trying to post this for like an hour...stupid computer.....
I'm just curious, can you smell it when you have ketones? My mom says I smell like nail polish remover when I have ketones. I usually get annoyed, test, and sure enough.... I have ketones! She is always right about this.... strange...
yes, i've heard the same thing. i don't usually smell it on myself, but i get a funny taste in my mouth. doesn't happen very often, by my parents and ex always notice(d) it.
I chew sweet smelling gum. My 'rents have in the past thought it was ketones. Well my dad at least. I have never really had them all that often, so I don't know if I smell like ketones. Still weird, but people apparently can.
For a couple of days before Brandan was diagnosed his breath smelled sweet. I thought it was the juice he was drinking or the toothpaste I used on his teeth. It went away a couple of days before he was diagnosed, but I never noticed a bad smell. One of the nurses in the ER asked me if I had noticed a change in his breath and she said the sweet smell in his breath is known as "Juicy Fruit Breath" and it occurs when BG gets real high. I added that to the long list of things I noticed and didn't think anything of , but I've never smelled it again so I don't know if there's any truth to it.
The day I was diagnosed, the doctor (before getting my bg reading back) told me he knew i was diabetic cause I had the sweetest whickey breath. My mom couldn't smell it, but my boyfriend could. He said he liked it. I could taste it too, but I thought I just needed to brush my teeth more (:
my mom says i smell like fruit whenever i have keytones and she is always right. i usually have a strange taste in my mouth when i have keytones.

Nobody has ever told me I smell like fruit ; just nail polish remover. I wonder what kind of fruit? Is it a good smell? Also, what's with the taste?? I can't describe what it tastes like but it's not a good taste :o(

I remember a while back there was a CSI episode where the girl identified her attacker by his smell. She said she remembered his sweet smelling cologne or deodorant. In typical CSI fasion, they miraculously knew it was the smell of a diabetic with chronically high BS. Just added to the list of why I don't want to be high, I don't want to smell fruity! haha. But fortunately I havn't had ketone issues and try to keep my bs levels down, and my wife has never said she can smell when I'm high - I'll have to ask. Insulin on the other hand, we can both smell that across the room.
I can smell when my daughter has ketones, and cannot when I myself have them. It's a sour/sweet smell. Someone said nail polish remover - kind of like that, but sweet too.
Since this conversation I am now more aware of me and my smells, thank you all so very much. I realize when I work out and shower after. I need to stop chewing gum. I keep smelling my gum as I am breathing harder and such and start to wonder and panic about the smells especially in the shower. So the past few days I have smelt my gum and wondered if it was ketones. I blame you all, I hate smelling myself in general even though I smell nice, but now I am even more aware of this and want to sniff myself and figure out what the smell is.
