Sleepovers

How do you manage going on sleepovers? When ever I go on a sleepover I end up having to come home because my BS was to high and I was doing corrections and when I was at a perfect number would have to much insulin active. Then my mom would have to come and pick me up because she was afraid off me going to low and no one would know what to do. I'm just like reallly tired of missing all of the fun and being with my friends.

Hi Katie,

I had a real problem letting my daughter go to sleepovers, and to be honest, I still don't like it when she spends the night away from home.  Here's what we do though, to help get through it:

She agrees to check every two hours, even through the night.  She has a cell phone, and she sets alarms on it to wake her up.  I also set mine, and if she doesn't call me when mine goes off, I call her.  She knows this is the only way I will let her go.  Makes for a night with a lot of broken sleep, but she needs to have that experience sometimes.  She also promises to not eat very heavy, and to eat things with low carbs if they are doing a lot of munching.  She is older now and goes to bed much later, so usually if she is a really good number at bedtime, that is a good indicator she will be level through the night.

Hope this helps!

Well first off, when I have sleep overs with my friends, we don't really sleep till about 6 in the morning, and that can mess up your numbers. On my pump I use an extended bolus feature that gives me a continuous dose of how ever much insulin over how ever long I want and I just munch on some snack and test every once in a while. It's tough to deal with diabetes whe nyour trying to have fun with friends, but they'll understand the importance of testing and keeping good BS.

I go to friends' houses and I don't have any trouble.  If my bg gets too high, I just give correction and if it gets too low, then I eat candy or glucose tablets to bring it back up, just as I would do if I was at home.  I always take glucose tablets with me incase I get low and don't have any candy.  I just think of what I would do if I am at home.  I have been diabetic for over three years, and I am 15, so I guess it's harder depending on how long you've had diabetes and how old you are.  My advice for you is to just treat the situation as you would do if you were at home.

I do about the same thing!!!!

i would take my stuff with me if i were you so that you can do exactly what you do at home. i would always do that when ever i had sleepovers. even in high school and college when i would stay over at other people's homes i would do exactly what i did at home. check when you eat, check when you feel high or low. do dosages at the times when it is needed. that's the best advice i can give.

I treat it this way too :)

I usually have sugar tabs and a small snack with me so I'm ok on my own, but if I do need something I just tell my friends what I need, whether its juice, a small snack, etc, and they don't have a problem getting it for me. Sometimes they ask for an explanation, sometimes not, but I don't mind either way and neither do they.

You really do just have to treat it as if you're home. It takes a lil bit of practice, especially with the extended eating thing (chips and stuff) but you get the hang of it eventually. :)

Thank you guys all so much!! I just had my first sucssesful sleepover in almost 2 years! Thanks Again!~

My mom gives all my friends lectures on how to use the glucagon and all that mess. haha. and at sleepovers its hard, but try and hold back on all the sweets to avoid going high, popcorn doesnt spike to much, and as long as you have fast sugar on you, it shouldnt be a problem.  There's no reason you should miss all the fun !

Thanks soo much!!!!!!!!! i had another secssesful sleepover!!  im soooo happy. im starting to actually feel some what normal. Even though i woke up and my bs is 280, but whatever. we ate brownies at 4 in the morning. so i guess that explains it all. Thanks again!!

Hello,

I guess our worries will never end for our type one kidos.

My son is only 7 years old and is too young for sleepovers anyway but I think even as he grows up, it will be hard for me to let go and allow him to sleep anywhere else.  I wake up now 3 or 4 times a night to check on him.

Well if your kid is 7 now and he will probaly srat sleeping over at buddies houses at 15 thats 8 yrs of exp..my mom trust me, im guessin cuz she knos she raised me right..their shudnt be any fear

Well all of my friends know that i have diabetes but when i go i usually just go on about the party or the sleepover. When i have pizza or whatever they r having i usually call my mom. if you dont have a cell phone, then use the parents phone. if its like a snack then i just give myself insulin myself. My mom texts me every 2 hours to tell me to test my BG. How old are you? My mom got me a phone when i was 5 and it just had their number on it i couldnt txt or anything. She got me it because my diabetes. Just in case of emergency. Then as i got older she let me text my friends and stuff. lol

well usually the slppeovers i go to, they r my best friends. they understand and help me with my shots. sometimes they are just sick of me having to do the shots on my own, they give them to me... haha. but i carry around the Calorie King book just incase. Hope this helped :)

That happens to me alot but iv been trying to be on top of it so i can stay my friends... I alot of times get really high cause all my friends try to junk out and i join them sometimes... (bad decision)

I do the same as all of you although my friends don’t know i am diabetic. I just make an excuse to go to the bathroom or something and then that way i get the sweet out of my bag into my mouth. Mostly my mom just tells my friends mom because she knows they’ll understand better and can help me in the time if my BS gets low. If its high, i simply inject the insulin and do eat something, otherwise the chances of my BS to get low are very high.
