Office People, They Just Don't Get It

Note: this is a rant!

I was in the last hour of the day in school, and suddenly I felt low.  I scurried to the office litterally dripping with sweat, and shaking uncontrolably.  The secratary in her infinite wisdom(sarcasm) said, "I something wrong?"

"'I'm low" I said, trying to remain conscious, "I'm gonna' get some juice."

"Okay, but test first."

"I will after I get a snack."

This is where it gets bad.  This is where she says something so completley stupid I invariably wanted to definstrate her.

"You can't drink juice untill you test." she said.

I was stunned, it took me a minute just to process how stupid what she had just said was.  I spent the next few, desperatly needed, minutes arguing with her, telling her that it was in my best interest to drink first.

"But what happens if you aren't low, and you drink the juice?" she said.

This time I was dumbfounded, "Nothing," I screamed at her.  Instead of continuing this conversation, she instead got an administrator and I tested.  The monitor read 64 which, I know, isn't the lowest number, but I don't go low very often, so it felt that was.

Is this a common experience?  Am I wierd for being angry about this?

quick solution: don't go to the office when you are feeling low and need a snack.

you're 15...I'm sorry but wtf are you doing going to the office in the first place to ask PERMISSION to go get juice? You don't NEED permission to get juice and treat a low in ANY situtation. you were obviously already excused from class..so wtf dude! seriously! just go get the juice!

The office at my school is right next to the cafeteria, so i keep my testing stuff there just for the ease of it.  I always test after i feel low to make sure i go up, that's why i was in the office.  I was less than 10 feet away from the office in my class.  And the office lady was barring me from getting in the office.

Wow that's ridiculous, what ignorance. Next time I would try telling her you can sense it and the risks of waiting to drink outweigh the risks of possibly incorrectly taking in sugar. That's really frustrating though, maybe you should talk to the principal, explain to him/her the situation, then get him to speak to the administrators.

Yea there's no way your health should be put at risk like that, I would definitely talk to the principal or something

Ian - is there a reason you can't keep the meter on you at all times?  I have heard of some schools that won't allow it or even force students to keep insulin and whatever else you need at the office.  Keep the meter in your backpack at all times if you can and most definitely keep glucotabs with you so you don't have to trust that the people in the office will do the right thing.

its not he office that was bad to me but the PE teacher. and you're not weird for being angry i had to deal with it for a year and i was so sick cause i was afraid to go low so i wouldn't take ANY lunch insulin and i'd eat a snack before his class

You have the right, no matter where you are to keep your testing supplies on you. Your school cannot deny you the right to put your health above everything else.

again...wtf dude! you're 15..why are your supplies not in your backpack or locker?!

jeebus, kids these days! where's the independance? Why are adults having to hold onto things for them! in the 1st grade when i was diganosed, all the way to the 7th grade, i kept my kit with my snacks and backpack at the back of the classroom..when i moved on to lockers in junior high and highschool it was in my backpack and that was either with me in the classroom or in my locker!

i know exactly how you feel.

when you are low all you want to do is get something in you.

i take glucose tablets because im on a pump and they just seem to work better for me and of course everyone is different in treating there high's and low's.

but neways when im at the mall or something you can tell when ur low instead having to sit down somewhere and dig out ur meter and stuff i just take a glucose wait fifteen min. if im still feeling bad go to a dressing room and check.

but the lowest ive been at school is 35, my nurse is so freak'n stupid.

i cant stand it.

okay well i was three hundred cause we were trying to still get my pump figured out and so i was high and i called my mom well ur not suppose to bolus for ur bs until its been three hours since you have done it.

well it wasnt.

so i called my mom talked to her i was 300 so i had know idea what i was talk'n about.

so my nurse got off and said go ahead and bolus for ur bs ur mom said to.

well she lied.

instead of following my mom's instructions she followed her own cause she thinks she knows everything about nething

so i went clear down to 35 went back up to forty 15 min. later then like fifty some then went back down to forty.

 i felt HORRIBLE!

but afterwards i got some glucose tabs in me i felt fine.

so then the nurse calls my mom saying i feel horrible and i need to go home

i said that i felt fine and needed to stay at school cause i had tests and projects that day.

so when i left the nurses office she called my mom and told her i wanted to go home so my mom had my aunt come and get me like with in five min. and when my aunt went to take me home the nurse refused for her to take me home because she said that she didnt want my aunt driving with me low.

i said she knew what to do, and im going home.

so then we finally left and i was like mom whyd you have aunt rebonica get me i feel fine.

shes like didnt you say you wanted to come home cause you felt horrible

i was like no i felt fine afterwards shes like well the nurse said you wanted to come home.

i said no i felt bad but after the glucose settled into my system i wanted to stay cause i had important stuff at school i had to do.

i hate school nurses who think they know everything about nething

just try to get through it.

and always remember nobody else knows ur body better then you do.

you really need to get up to date with today's school rules.

were not allowed to keep our bookbags with us.

because of school shootings and stuff.

so its impossible to carry around a bookbag.

but you are allowed to carry stuff with you in a pencil case or something.

its a rule everywhere.

also take it to your board of education.

or something!

something needs to be done about schools not taking our disease seriously!

its not our problem we got diagnosed with it.

so why are they giving us trouble about it!

it makes me so mad!

maybe in the states..but i'm canada dude. and i left school 4years ago. we didnt have that rule then..even at my school where for the last two years i was there..we got at least one bomb threat a month or every other month. i also work with several people who have kids in various stages of schooling and none of them have that rule.

You aren't out of line for being upset, I think this is sadly a very common thing. People think they are helping, when in fact you are low and can't think straight enough to set them straight. It sounds like you need to get your administrators and possibly endocrinologist involved so that everyone knows to leave you alone in the future. When I got my pump I also got a letter circulated around school so that teachers wouldn't try to take it from me (thinking it was a pager or something). It worked very well for me.

Ian,

I am sorry you had to go through this. People don't understand, you're right. Sometimes, I just want them to feel how I feel for just a slim moment when I have a low....just to see if they are able to keep their composure as well as you did:) However, when I was in highschool, they wanted to keep my stuff in an office, and I was totally against that idea. I kept my snacks for lows in my locker or in a backpack. I didn't have lows often, but when I did, I was able to take care of it myself. Good luck to you. Sometimes its nice to just rant...makes you feel better:)

What are the specific reasons you cannot keep a glucometer or sugar with you? Does your school say students cannot carry bookbags? Do they want you to test with a nurse present? It seems that you could use the Americans with Disabilities Act to allow you to carry supplies with you. If not, since the Act requires "reasonable accomodation", you could at least look into requiring the school to let you store testing supplies and sugar in every room that you have a class so that it is there whenever you need it. I'm no legal expert, but this should not be allowed to happen.

I think that is a problemo- I used to go to a public school ( im now in private hafly becasue of that) but there the nursing staff understiood- the only problem i had was i was in kindergarten and the office was half was across campus and they made me walk there all alone, i was once walking there and i felt really not normally low, so i finally get there they give me my test kit and im like 24. And i had to stay there for lke and hour so they could monotor my sugars. and i was really wobbly on my feett. But everyone there was really nice and understanding.

The pproblem with you'r story was you could have been like LO... and if she had made you wait anylonger you probably would have been in a coma or fainted

i kow how you feel and i wish i had gotten a letter around more than once a teacher has asked when i check my sugar on my PDM" any important messages" and also a lunch monitor ripped the pdm out of my hands and told my to put my phone away or she was going to take it

How smart are you,I looked at one of your post and your talking about maturity onset diabetes, mody. I have never heard of that.good for you! And about this post .Office lady wrong, you right.
