My concern is that I do not believe that Type 1 Diabetes is getting this severity of recognition in the mainstream.
What can we do about that????

I know!!! I totally think so too. SO many people do the Breast Cancer Race for the Cure, and like you said sports teams wear pink, etc. Why doesn't diabetes (type 1) get more recognition??
I don't know how we can make T1 D more "known" to the public. We really should though!!
every disease does walks... every disease raises money... we need to be the first to do something strange and out of the normal... something to really draw some attention. front page prime time news....

D isn't the only thing that takes a back pedal. Cancer is just one of the "favourite kids" that gets all the parent's love cuz more people die from it and the rest...like D, MS, Downsyndrome and the likes get ignored more often as they are slightly less serious.
I don't make a huge deal out of cancer getting more attention than diabetes, because i know there are a LOT of causes out there that are fighting equally as hard for attention and help with research. we're not the only ones, and cancer at one point was just like diabetes. (Does anyone know if they were the first cause to start the walks, the rides and all of that?)
like Since suggests, we need to find a way to make us different from the rest of the people out there asking for money to help with research, asking for people to educate themselves, etc. it's just a matter of what....
