My name is Yasmeen and my daughter Hannah who is a young 6 was just diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. I am trying to look for local chapters(we live in Manassas, Virginia) if any and support group for us as parents and more importantly for Hannah so she knows she is not alone.
Any and all help would be wonderful. I look forward to getting to know some of you and to learn from your experience and wisdom.
Hi Yasmeen - I am sorry about Hannah's diagnosis, but am so glad you found juvenation. This is a wonderful support group and I know I would have had a lot harder time with my son's diagnosis if it hadn't been here.
It will get easier. I know I didn't really believe that at first because everything was so overwhelming and constant, but it becomes part of your normal routine. The thing I wish someone would have really told me was that diabetes can take you on an emotional roller coaster. It is OK to be sad and to grieve for your child's perfect health and the normal routine you had. You obviously can't let the grief consume you, because you have a child to take care of, but it is important to let yourself feel those feelings and work through them. You will come out on the other side a much stronger person.
Ask any questions or vent any frustrations you have. We're all here for you.
thanks for the reassurance. I try to be strong around Hannah but I do share may anguish and heartbreak on FB. I am so lost at this moment, in this world of Type 1. Thanks
Glad to have met you but sorry for both of us that it is under these circumstances.
so sorry to hear about the diagnosis - it must be tough and overwhelming. This is a great croud and very helpful. My personal experience is this: I have lived with diabetes for 33+ years, I am ok, and while it is a giant pain in the (leg, arm, backside and fingertips) it really hasn't stopped me from doing anything I wanted to do.
thanks so much for the reassurance. I know she can lead a normal life but it is still so hard to digest. Thanks for the chapter info. I will contact them and see how it goes.
Hi Yasmine. I'm so sorry you have to go through this. )-:
There are definitely other NoVA people w/ T1 kiddos on here, I just can't remember who they are. By posting here (and you can also try out childrenwithdiabetes.com, and FB as you mentioned), you'll def find people in your area!
I'm in Alexandria -- I'll send you a friend request so we can get in touch if you have questions or need to vent.
